Biography

Short Description

Benjamin the Deacon was a Christian minister of the fifth-century Church in the Sasanian Empire, remembered as a martyr in both Eastern and Western liturgical traditions. Almost everything that can be said of him with any historical control derives from a single near-contemporary narrative: the Ecclesiastical History of Theodoret of Cyrrhus, composed around the middle of the fifth century. Theodoret presents Benjamin as a deacon who was imprisoned during a persecution of Christians in Persia and who later suffered a particularly cruel death rather than accept a royal command to stop preaching. No ancient source records the year of his birth, his native city, his family, or whether he was married. He is therefore known solely through his confession and martyrdom.

The persecution in which he died belongs to the reign of Bahram V, who succeeded Yazdegerd I around 420. Under Yazdegerd the Persian Church had experienced a period of relative peace, but conflict over the status of Zoroastrian fire temples brought that peace to an end. Theodoret relates that a bishop named Abdas destroyed a fire temple; when the king ordered him to rebuild it and he refused, Abdas was executed and a general assault on churches and clergy followed. Benjamin was arrested in the course of this repression and held in prison for two years. He would not recant or cease to profess Christianity. An ambassador of the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius II, then at the Persian court on diplomatic business, interceded for the Christian prisoners and obtained Benjamin’s release. The condition attached to that release was that the deacon should no longer speak of his religion to anyone at court.

Benjamin refused to interpret his freedom as a vow of silence. He is said to have declared that he could not conceal the light of the Gospel he had received, and he resumed teaching. When the king learned that the deacon was again preaching, Benjamin was rearrested. Theodoret describes the torture that followed: sharp reeds were driven under his fingernails, and a stake studded with knots was thrust through his body, producing a slow and painful death. Later Western martyrologies, following this account, date the martyrdom to 424, a year that fits the early phase of Bahram’s persecution though it is not stated in Theodoret’s text itself. Benjamin was a deacon, not a bishop, and he never held the office of patriarch or pope; he belongs to the clergy of the Persian Church, later known as the Church of the East, in the generation before the Council of Ephesus.

His cult is ancient rather than the product of a medieval papal canonization. The Roman Martyrology lists him on 31 March as a deacon martyred in Persia for continuing to preach the word of God. The same date is observed in various Eastern calendars. No reliable tradition preserves a place of burial or a list of patronages attached to his name. Hagiographers from Theodoret through Alban Butler have treated him as an example of a cleric who would not purchase liberty by silence. Beyond that witness, the documentary record is silent, and it would be dishonest to supply a birthplace, a religious order, or a family that the sources do not give.
