Biography
Benvenutus Scotivoli, also known as Benvenuto Scotivoli and venerated as Saint Benvenuto of Osimo, was a Roman Catholic bishop of the thirteenth century whose career belongs to the March of Ancona in central Italy. He was born in the Adriatic port city of Ancona; no contemporary source preserves a reliable year of birth, and later figures sometimes attached to his name cannot be verified. He studied at the University of Bologna, then the foremost school of legal learning in Latin Europe, and obtained doctorates in both civil and canon law. After ordination to the priesthood he served as archdeacon of Ancona, a senior post in that church that combined administrative responsibility with pastoral care.
Pope Urban IV appointed him Bishop of Osimo, a diocese lying a short distance inland from Ancona. The appointment is traditionally placed in 1264, the last year of Urban IV’s pontificate. Scotivoli governed the see until his death some eighteen years later. Later notices of his episcopate stress personal austerity, care for the poor, and efforts to reform the clergy and restore discipline in the diocese. He is consistently described as a close friend of the Franciscan minister general and theologian Saint Bonaventure. A subsequent tradition holds that Bonaventure conferred the Franciscan habit upon him; whether he ever made a formal profession in the Order of Friars Minor is not established by surviving documentation, and he is best treated as a secular prelate formed in the legal schools and shaped by Franciscan friendship and spirituality rather than as a friar-bishop in the strict sense.
He died in Osimo on 22 March 1282 and was buried in the city’s cathedral, dedicated to Saint Leopardus. Local veneration arose after his death. In 1633 Pope Urban VIII confirmed the cult, the usual early-modern procedure for an ancient local devotion, and he has since been honored as a saint of the Catholic Church. His feast is kept on 22 March. He is the principal patron saint of Osimo. Beyond this outline—the Anconitan origin, Bolognese legal education, service as archdeacon, episcopate at Osimo under and after Urban IV, reputation for austerity and charity, friendship with Bonaventure, death in 1282, burial in the cathedral, and seventeenth-century confirmation of cult—the evidence does not support a more detailed reconstruction of his inner life or of the day-to-day administration of his diocese.
