Biography

Short Description

Beornstan (also spelled Byrnstan or Birnstan) was a tenth-century Bishop of Winchester in Anglo-Saxon England. He was consecrated to the see in May 931, in the reign of King Æthelstan, succeeding Bishop Frithestan, who had resigned that year. Almost nothing can be verified about his birth, family, or early career: no contemporary source records a year or place of birth, and he does not appear in the historical record with any certainty before his elevation. He witnesses royal charters during the early 930s, which is consistent with a short episcopate. He died on 1 November 934, after roughly three and a half years as bishop, and was succeeded by Ælfheah (often called Ælfheah the Bald).

The fullest surviving portrait of his character is not contemporary but comes from the twelfth-century historian William of Malmesbury, in the Gesta Pontificum Anglorum. William presents Beornstan as a man of marked humility and charity. According to this tradition he made a daily practice of washing the feet of twelve poor men and then giving them food and money. He was also remembered for praying at night for the dead: he would go into the cemetery of the Old Minster at Winchester and recite psalms and prayers for the departed. William relates that on one occasion the dead answered “Amen” at the end of his prayers. These anecdotes, written two centuries later, are the basis of his later reputation for sanctity; they cannot be independently confirmed from tenth-century evidence, but they shaped how he was remembered.

His brief tenure fell before the Benedictine reform of Winchester. In the 930s the Old Minster was still served by secular clergy; the monastic refoundation under Bishop Æthelwold took place a generation later, in the 960s. Later summaries that call Beornstan a Benedictine are therefore anachronistic. No writings by him survive, and no contemporary vita is known. After his death a local cult developed. Medieval calendars commemorate him on 4 November. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; veneration grew from local reputation and from William of Malmesbury’s account.

Beyond the date of his consecration, the date of his death, his place in the Winchester succession, and the later Winchester-centred stories of charity and nocturnal prayer, the historical record is sparse. He remains one of the more obscure tenth-century English bishops, known chiefly for those pious traditions and for his short occupancy of the see of Winchester under King Æthelstan.
