Biography

Short Description

Berard of Carbio was a Franciscan priest and missionary of the early thirteenth century and one of the first members of the Order of Friars Minor to die as a martyr. He was born at Carbio in Umbria, in central Italy, into the noble Leopardi family. No reliable source records the year of his birth. He entered the Franciscan order in its first generation and became associated with Francis of Assisi. Medieval accounts describe him as a man of learning who had acquired a knowledge of Arabic, a skill that later recommended him for preaching among Muslims.

In 1219 Francis of Assisi sent a small band of friars to the Islamic West. Berard went with four companions, Peter, Otho, Accursius, and Adjutus. They traveled first to Spain and preached in Seville, then under Almohad rule. After arrest there they were sent onward to Morocco. In Marrakesh they continued to preach the Christian faith in public. Their activity led to imprisonment and repeated corporal punishment at the hands of the local authorities and of the Almohad ruler.

The five friars were beheaded in Marrakesh on 16 January 1220. Their deaths made them the proto-martyrs of the Franciscan order. Franciscan tradition reports that Francis of Assisi, on receiving news of the martyrdom, declared that he now truly possessed Friars Minor. The bodies of the five were obtained by the Portuguese infante Pedro, who was then in Morocco, and were brought to Coimbra, where they were buried in the monastery of Santa Cruz. The presence of the relics and the fame of the martyrdom are closely associated with the vocation of Fernando of Lisbon, a canon of that house, who entered the Franciscans and is known as Saint Anthony of Padua.

Pope Sixtus IV canonized Berard and his four companions in 1481. Their feast is observed on 16 January. Beyond Berard’s Umbrian origin, priestly status, reported knowledge of Arabic, and the circumstances of the Moroccan mission, little personal detail can be verified from the surviving medieval sources. He is remembered principally as a leading figure among the first Franciscan martyrs and as a witness to the earliest Franciscan attempt to preach in the Islamic world.
