Biography

Short Description

Berchán (also spelled Berchan, Bercan, or Bearchan, and sometimes appearing in the affectionate Irish form Mo Berchán) is an early medieval Irish saint whose historical footprint is confined almost entirely to the liturgical calendars and genealogical tracts of the Irish church. He is identified in the principal martyrologies with the church of Cluain Sosta, anglicized as Clonsast, in the early medieval kingdom of the Uí Failge in the Irish midlands, corresponding to part of the present County Offaly. The ninth-century Martyrology of Óengus the Culdee and the related Martyrology of Tallaght both commemorate him on 4 December, and the seventeenth-century Martyrology of Donegal repeats the same date and localization. No Latin or Irish Life of the saint is known to have survived, and the Irish annals do not preserve a contemporary notice of his death. As a result, almost every particular of his biography remains uncertain.

Later compilers, notably the Martyrology of Donegal, record that Berchán was of the race of Cormac Cas, son of Ailill Ólom, a pedigree that would place his kindred among the Dál gCais of Munster. The same source describes him as both a bishop and a prophet. Genealogical affiliations of this kind are a standard feature of Irish hagiography and were often constructed or adjusted to serve the interests of particular churches and dynasties; they cannot be treated as independent historical evidence. The title of prophet, however, is significant for the later literary tradition. In the early Irish church, certain monastic founders and bishops were remembered as possessing the gift of prophecy, and this reputation could attract the ascription of later political verse to their names.

The church of Cluain Sosta appears to have been a monastic foundation of which Berchán was regarded as the patron or founder. Little archaeological or documentary detail survives concerning the site in the early period. A number of Scottish place-names, most notably Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire, have been linked by antiquarians with a Saint Berchan or Barchan. It is possible that these commemorate the same figure, a transferred cult, or an entirely distinct saint of similar name; the evidence does not permit a firm conclusion. Irish martyrologies also contain other entries for persons named Berchán on different days of the year, and modern scholarship warns against collapsing all of these commemorations into a single historical individual.

In the Middle Irish period a long verse composition known as the Prophecy of Berchán (Fáistine Bercháin) circulated under his name. The poem, which survives in later medieval manuscripts, reviews the succession of kings in Scotland and in Ireland in the conventional language of prophecy after the event. Philological and historical study has shown that the text, at least in the form in which it is now known, belongs to the eleventh or twelfth century and cannot be the work of an early medieval founder-saint. The ascription nevertheless demonstrates that Berchán’s reputation as a prophet remained alive in the learned circles of Ireland and Scotland several centuries after the age in which he is supposed to have lived.

No reliable year of birth or of death has been preserved. Conventional accounts place him in the sixth or seventh century, the era of Ireland’s principal monastic founders, but this dating is inferred from the general chronology of the early Irish church rather than from any specific record. The sources give no indication that he married or had children; they present him within the monastic and episcopal structures of the early medieval Irish church. His feast day is 4 December. Like other saints of his period, he was honoured by local cult rather than by any formal process of canonization at Rome. Beyond the martyrological commemorations, the genealogical notice, the association with Cluain Sosta, and the later prophetic text that bears his name, the life of Berchán cannot be reconstructed in any further detail.
