Biography

Short Description

Saint Bercharius, whose name also appears as Berchar and in French as Berchaire, was a monastic founder and abbot in Merovingian Gaul during the seventh century. Later tradition, recorded especially in the tenth-century Life written by Adso, abbot of Montier-en-Der, places his birth in Aquitaine among a family of noble rank. A precise year of birth is not established by contemporary evidence. As a young man he entered the monastery of Luxeuil in the Vosges, then one of the principal Columbanian houses of Francia, during the abbacy of Saint Waldebert. At Luxeuil he was formed in the austere Irish-Frankish monastic discipline associated with Saint Columbanus and his successors. He was subsequently ordained to the priesthood.

Through the support of Saint Nivard, Archbishop of Reims, Bercharius undertook the foundation of the monastery of Hautvillers (known in Latin as Altivillare or Altumvillare) in the Reims region, of which he became the first abbot. In the following years he established a second and more famous house in the forest of Der, the monastery later called Montier-en-Der (Monasterium Dervense), in the territory of the diocese of Châlons. He is also credited with founding a community of nuns at Puellemontier (Puellarum monasterium) nearby. These foundations belong to the broader movement of monastic colonization of forests and waste lands in seventh-century Austrasia and Champagne. The houses associated with him later followed the Benedictine tradition, and he is accordingly commemorated as a Benedictine abbot, though Luxeuil itself in his lifetime still stood in the Columbanian line.

Hagiographical narrative presents Bercharius as a strict superior. According to Adso, a monk named Daguin (Daguinus), whom the abbot had punished for a fault, attacked him with a knife and inflicted a mortal wound. Bercharius is said to have forbidden his community to pursue the assailant, to have forgiven him, and even to have supplied him with money so that he might flee, reportedly to England. The abbot lingered for a short time and then died of the wound. Traditional dates assign his death to late March in the last decades of the seventh century, most often to the year 696, though some accounts give 685; the exact year is not fixed by strictly contemporary record. He was buried at Montier-en-Der. Because he died by violence, local cult treated him as a martyr, even though the killing arose from a quarrel within the monastery rather than from public persecution.

The principal literary source for his life is Adso of Montier-en-Der’s Vita Sancti Bercharii, composed some two and a half centuries after the events it describes and shaped by the interests of the abbey that claimed him as founder and patron. Independent seventh-century documentation of his career is limited, and many personal details remain those of later monastic memory. Nonetheless, the existence of the communities of Hautvillers and Montier-en-Der, and the early medieval cult of their founder, are well anchored in the ecclesiastical history of the region. His feast has been kept on 26 March. Relics and liturgical commemoration at Montier-en-Der sustained his memory through the Middle Ages. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his status as saint rests on ancient local cult, later accepted in martyrologies.
