Biography

Short Description

Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, known as Bernadette, was born on 7 January 1844 in Lourdes in the Hautes-Pyrénées of southwestern France, the eldest child of François Soubirous, a miller, and Louise Castérot. After the family mill failed, the household lived in extreme poverty and occupied a single room in a former jail known as the Cachot. Bernadette suffered from chronic asthma and other ailments from childhood, received little formal education, and spoke the regional Occitan dialect rather than French. Contemporary accounts describe her as simple, pious, and physically frail.

On 11 February 1858, while gathering firewood near the Grotto of Massabielle on the banks of the Gave de Pau, the fourteen-year-old Bernadette reported seeing a lady dressed in white with a blue sash, a yellow rose on each foot, and a rosary. She later recounted a series of eighteen apparitions lasting until 16 July 1858. The figure asked for prayer and penance, requested that a chapel be built, and indicated a spring at the grotto. On 25 March 1858 the lady identified herself with the title the Immaculate Conception, which Pope Pius IX had defined as dogma in 1854. Local civil officials interrogated Bernadette repeatedly. After a canonical investigation, Bertrand-Sévère Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes, declared the apparitions worthy of belief in January 1862. Water from the spring and reports of healings drew pilgrims, and Lourdes rapidly became a major Catholic shrine.

In July 1866 Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers at the convent of Saint-Gildard, receiving the name Sister Marie-Bernard. She spent the remainder of her life in the cloister, serving in the infirmary and as sacristan, and generally declining to discuss the apparitions. She continued to suffer from tuberculosis of the bone, including a tumor on her right knee, as well as asthma. She died at Nevers on 16 April 1879 at the age of thirty-five.

Church authorities exhumed her body in 1909, 1919, and 1925; it was found incorrupt and is displayed in a glass reliquary in the chapel of the former Saint-Gildard convent in Nevers. Pope Pius XI beatified her on 14 June 1925 and canonized her on 8 December 1933. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Catholic world. Saint Bernadette is commemorated liturgically on 16 April.
