Biography

Short Description

Bernard Vũ Văn Duệ, recorded in older Western sources as Bernard Due Van Vo, was a Vietnamese Catholic priest and martyr of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was born in 1755 in the village of Quần Anh, in the Xuân Trường prefecture of Sơn Nam Hạ (now in Hải Hậu district, Nam Định province) in northern Vietnam, then under the Lê dynasty and the Trịnh lords. Little is independently documented about his family, childhood, or the circumstances of his conversion or seminary training. He entered the Latin-rite Catholic priesthood and spent a long pastoral career among the Christian communities of Tonkin, in a church that had been planted by Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions clergy in the preceding centuries and that already possessed a substantial Vietnamese clergy and laity.

After the Nguyễn dynasty unified the country, Emperor Minh Mạng (reigned 1820-1841) issued successive edicts that banned Christianity, ordered the expulsion of foreign missionaries, and required Vietnamese Christians to recant, often by trampling a crucifix. Persecution, which had been intermittent in earlier reigns, became systematic in the 1830s. Father Bernard, by then an elderly priest of many decades’ standing, continued to exercise his ministry under these conditions. In 1838 he was arrested. Surviving hagiographical notices, which follow the pattern of other Tonkinese martyrdom accounts of the same years, state that he refused to apostatize.

He was conveyed to Đồng Hới in Quảng Bình province, a provincial seat in central Vietnam, and there condemned to death. On 1 August 1838 he was executed by beheading. He was about eighty-three years old. His death belonged to a concentrated wave of executions of priests and lay Christians in 1838 and the years immediately following, later gathered by the Catholic Church into the larger group known as the Martyrs of Vietnam. No reliably attested burial site for him has been preserved in standard historical or liturgical sources.

Bernard Vũ Văn Duệ was beatified on 2 May 1909 by Pope Pius X, in one of the groups of Vietnamese martyrs whose causes were promoted by the missionary vicariates. He was canonized in Rome on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II together with 116 other martyrs who had died in Vietnam between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The group is inscribed in the General Roman Calendar on 24 November. Veneration of the Vietnamese Martyrs is widespread among Catholics in Vietnam and in the overseas Vietnamese diaspora; distinct personal patronages attached to Bernard Vũ Văn Duệ alone are not clearly established in the major martyrologies.
