Biography

Short Description

Bernard II of Lippe, known in German as Bernhard II. zur Lippe, was a Westphalian nobleman of the later twelfth and early thirteenth centuries who ruled as Lord of Lippe and afterward entered the Cistercian order, ending his life as a missionary bishop in the Baltic. He was born around the middle of the twelfth century, conventionally dated to about 1140, into the still modest lordly house that took its name from the river Lippe in what is now North Rhine-Westphalia. His father, Herman I, is the first member of the family who can be documented with certainty as holding the lordship. Upon Herman’s death in or about 1167, Bernard succeeded as Lord of Lippe. The family’s power base lay in the borderlands of Saxony and Westphalia, a region whose political geography was transformed after the fall of Henry the Lion in 1180, when the Archbishop of Cologne received the ducal rights in Westphalia. Bernard belonged to the generation of territorial lords who used that vacuum to consolidate local authority, found towns, and endow religious houses.

As a secular prince he is remembered above all as a founder. In the mid-1180s he established the town of Lippstadt on the river Lippe, granting it urban rights and attracting settlers; Lippstadt became one of the earliest planned towns of Westphalia and a lasting centre of Lippe power. He likewise promoted the rise of Lemgo. In 1185, together with Widukind of Rheda, he founded the Cistercian abbey of Marienfeld in the diocese of Münster, an endowment that bound the family to the White Monks and later provided Bernard himself with a monastic home. These foundations were instruments of territorial lordship as well as of piety: towns generated revenue and loyalty, while a Cistercian house anchored the family’s memoria and offered a respectable retreat from the world.

Bernard married Heilwig of Are-Hochstaden, a match that linked Lippe to another Rhenish-Westphalian comital family. The couple had several children who illustrate the typical high-noble strategy of dividing worldly and ecclesiastical careers. Their son Herman II succeeded to the lordship of Lippe. Other sons entered the Church at the highest regional level: Otto became Bishop of Utrecht and was killed in 1227 at the Battle of Ane; Gerhard rose to be Archbishop of Bremen; another son, Bernard, became Bishop of Paderborn. Daughters were placed in marriages or in convents, including abbacies. The concentration of three episcopal sees in one generation of brothers is striking and testifies both to the family’s rising status and to Bernard’s own later ecclesiastical connections.

In the mid-1190s Bernard laid down his secular power in favour of Herman II and took the Cistercian habit at Marienfeld, the house he had founded. Some years later, already an elderly man, he left the cloister for the missionary field of Livonia. He became abbot of the Cistercian abbey of Dünamünde (Daugavgrīva) near Riga, a house closely tied to the crusading church created by Bishop Albert of Riga. In 1218 he was consecrated Bishop of Semgallia (Semigallia), a missionary see on the still incompletely conquered southern edge of the Livonian mission. His Baltic years thus belong to the Northern Crusades and to the planting of Latin dioceses among the Baltic peoples. He returned to Germany in the early 1220s and died on 30 April 1224; later tradition places his death at Meschede. He was not a pope or a patriarch, nor is a universally recognized papal canonization or an official feast in the General Roman Calendar securely attached to his name, though Cistercian and regional memory has sometimes honoured him as blessed. His lasting historical importance lies in the urban and monastic foundations that shaped the later principality of Lippe and in the unusual path that took a Westphalian territorial lord from castle and town-founding into the Cistercian order and a Baltic bishopric.
