Biography

Short Description

Bernward of Hildesheim, also known in Latin sources as Bernardus and in German as Bernward, was a Saxon nobleman who served as Bishop of Hildesheim from 993 until his death in 1022 and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. He was born in the mid-tenth century into a prominent noble family of Saxony; his grandfather was Athelbero, Count Palatine of Saxony. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised under the care of his uncle Folkmar, Bishop of Utrecht, and received a thorough education at the cathedral school of Hildesheim. He later continued his formation in the circle of Archbishop Willigis of Mainz and at the imperial court. Ordained to the priesthood, he became a court chaplain and was entrusted by Empress Theophanu with the education of the young Otto III, a role that placed him at the center of Ottonian political and religious life in the late tenth century.

In 993 Otto III appointed Bernward bishop of Hildesheim, and he was consecrated by Willigis of Mainz. As bishop he combined pastoral care with vigorous administration: he strengthened the defenses of his city, promoted the cathedral school, and sought relics and privileges on journeys that included travel to Italy in the emperor’s company. A major controversy of his episcopate was the Gandersheim conflict, a protracted dispute with Archbishop Willigis over jurisdiction of the imperial convent of Gandersheim, which involved the emperor’s sister Sophia and was only gradually resolved. Throughout his tenure Bernward remained closely tied to the Ottonian court while building up the material and spiritual resources of his diocese in Saxony.

Bernward is especially remembered as one of the great artistic patrons of the Ottonian age and as a craftsman in his own right, skilled in metalwork and deeply interested in architecture and the liturgical arts. He founded the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael in Hildesheim and caused its church to be built as an Ottonian double-choir basilica; the church was consecrated in 1022 and was intended as his burial place. For Hildesheim he commissioned the celebrated bronze doors whose Old and New Testament scenes are among the outstanding monuments of early medieval sculpture, as well as the bronze Bernward Column with scenes from the life of Christ. Numerous liturgical objects associated with him, including crosses and candlesticks, attest to the high level of goldsmiths’ work he fostered. St. Michael’s Church and Hildesheim Cathedral, together with these commissions, are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bernward died on 20 November 1022, not long after the consecration of St. Michael’s, and was buried in the crypt of that church. A cult developed at his tomb in the following generations, and he was canonized in 1193 by Pope Celestine III. His feast is kept on 20 November. He is invoked as a patron of goldsmiths, architects, painters, and sculptors, and he remains closely associated with the city and diocese of Hildesheim. Historians regard him as a characteristic figure of Ottonian episcopal culture: a noble cleric, imperial tutor, diocesan organizer, and patron whose commissions helped define the visual language of the German church around the year 1000.
