Biography

Short Description

Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos de Seña was born in 1711 in Torrelobatón, in the province of Valladolid in Castile, Spain, the son of Manuel de Hoyos and Francisca de Seña. He grew up in a Catholic household of early Bourbon Spain and was noted from childhood for piety and an attraction to religious life. In 1726, at the age of fourteen, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Villagarcía de Campos, beginning the long Jesuit formation then customary in the Castilian province of the Society. He subsequently studied the humanities, philosophy, and theology in Jesuit colleges of the region, in the ordinary course of a scholastic of that era, with his formation tied to the Jesuit communities of Castile, including Valladolid.

While still in formation, Hoyos became the principal early promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain. That devotion, rooted in the seventeenth-century revelations associated with Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in France, was only beginning to take hold in the Iberian world. From 1733 he reported repeated mystical experiences of Christ, which he described to his superiors and to his spiritual director, the Jesuit Juan de Loyola. Tradition associated with him includes the so-called Great Promise, according to which Christ pledged a special reign of the Sacred Heart in Spain. Hoyos promoted the feast of the Sacred Heart, acts of reparation, and related Jesuit apostolates, and he left written accounts of his interior life that later circulated among Spanish Jesuits and devotees of the Sacred Heart.

He was ordained a priest in January 1735, still in his early twenties. His ordained ministry lasted less than a year. Later in 1735 he contracted typhus while in Valladolid and died there on 29 November 1735, at the age of twenty-four. He was buried in the Jesuit church in that city, on the site later identified with the National Sanctuary of the Great Promise. Although he never held high office and lived entirely within the ordinary structures of Jesuit formation and early priesthood, his reputation for holiness and the memory of his visions were preserved by his brethren, notably through biographical work connected with Juan de Loyola, and devotion to him persisted in Valladolid and among promoters of the Sacred Heart.

A cultus developed around him in Valladolid and in Sacred Heart circles in Spain. After a lengthy process he was beatified on 18 April 2010 during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, with the beatification celebration held in Valladolid. He is known as Blessed Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos and has not been canonized. His liturgical commemoration is on 29 November. He remains closely linked with the National Sanctuary of the Great Promise in Valladolid, a center of Sacred Heart devotion in Spain, and is remembered as a youthful Jesuit mystic of the eighteenth century rather than as a founder, bishop, or missionary of long public career.
