Biography

Short Description

Bernhard Lichtenberg was born on 3 December 1875 in Ohlau in Prussian Silesia, then part of the German Empire (today Oława, Poland). He studied theology at Innsbruck and at the seminary in Breslau (Wrocław) and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1899 for the Diocese of Breslau. After early parish assignments he was sent to Berlin, where he spent the rest of his ministry. During the First World War he served as a military chaplain. In the capital he became known as a conscientious pastor and as a Centre Party city councillor in Charlottenburg, combining parish work with public engagement in a rapidly growing industrial metropolis.

When Berlin was erected as a diocese in 1930, Lichtenberg remained among its leading clergy. He was made a cathedral canon of St. Hedwig’s and in 1938 cathedral provost (Dompropst), the senior priest of the cathedral. From that pulpit, after the nationwide pogrom of November 1938, he began to pray publicly each day for the persecuted Jews and for prisoners in concentration camps, an act of liturgical protest that was both unusual and dangerous. He also wrote to Nazi officials, including Hermann Göring and the Reich health leadership, to condemn the so-called T4 euthanasia programme that was killing people with disabilities. His protests were not confined to private letters: he continued to name the victims from the cathedral and to refuse the regime’s demand that the Church remain silent.

In October 1941 two women who had heard him pray for Jews denounced him to the Gestapo. He was arrested, interrogated, and in May 1942 sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for alleged misuse of the pulpit and related political offences. He served the term in Berlin-Tegel prison. When the sentence expired the Gestapo did not release him but ordered his transfer to Dachau. Already in poor health, he died on 5 November 1943 in a hospital at Hof an der Saale while being transported south. He was first buried in Hof; in 1965 his remains were brought to the crypt of St. Hedwig’s Cathedral in Berlin, where they remain.

Lichtenberg’s resistance was pastoral rather than conspiratorial: he used prayer, preaching, and written protest rather than underground organisation. After the war he became a symbol of Catholic opposition to racial persecution in Germany. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Berlin on 23 June 1996, together with the priest Karl Leisner. Yad Vashem later recognised him as Righteous Among the Nations. His feast is observed on 5 November, the anniversary of his death. He has not been canonised.
