Biography

Short Description

Bertha of Kent was a Frankish princess of the Merovingian royal house who became queen of Kent in the late sixth century and played a significant part in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. She was the daughter of Charibert I, king of Paris, and of his wife Ingoberg. Charibert ruled one of the Frankish kingdoms from the early 560s until his death later in that decade. The historian Gregory of Tours, writing in the sixth century, noted that a daughter of Charibert was given in marriage to a man of Kent; later English tradition and modern scholarship identify that daughter with Bertha. Her upbringing at a Christian Frankish court, in a dynasty that had been Catholic since the baptism of Clovis, formed the religious background she later brought to Britain.

The marriage to Æthelberht, king of Kent, was a diplomatic alliance between the Franks and the most powerful English kingdom of the south-east. It took place in the later sixth century, before the arrival of the Roman missionaries. A condition of the match, recorded by Bede, was that Bertha be allowed to practice her Christian faith without hindrance. She was accompanied to Kent by Liudhard, a Frankish bishop who served as her chaplain. At Canterbury she used a surviving late-Roman church to the east of the later cathedral precinct; the building was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, whose cult was strong in Gaul. That church, known as St Martin's, remained a centre of her household's worship and is commonly described as the oldest church in continuous use in the English-speaking world. Through Liudhard and this chapel, a small Christian presence existed at the Kentish court while the king and most of his people were still pagan.

When Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine and his companions to preach in Britain in 597, they landed in Kent and were received by Æthelberht. Bede and later writers present Bertha's established Christianity as a reason the king was willing to hear the missionaries and to grant them a dwelling in Canterbury. Æthelberht himself accepted baptism, an event traditionally placed in the late 590s. In 601 Gregory wrote a letter to Queen Bertha, which survives among his correspondence. He commended her knowledge of letters and her faith, exhorted her to support and complete the conversion of her husband and people, and likened her role to that of Helena, mother of Constantine. The letter is firm evidence that Bertha was alive and influential in 601. Her daughter Æthelburh later married Edwin of Northumbria and, with Bishop Paulinus, helped introduce Roman Christianity in the north, so that Bertha's family connections extended the Kentish conversion beyond her own kingdom.

Bertha and Æthelberht had children who continued the Kentish royal line. Their son Eadbald succeeded his father as king; after a brief return to pagan custom he accepted Christianity. Their daughter Æthelburh became queen of Northumbria. Bertha died at an unknown date after 601 and before or around the time of Æthelberht's death in the mid-610s. She was buried in the church of Saints Peter and Paul at Canterbury, the monastic church founded by Augustine, in the porch dedicated to Saint Martin, where the king was also interred. The site later formed part of St Augustine's Abbey. Because contemporary narrative sources are few—chiefly Gregory of Tours, Bede's Ecclesiastical History, and Gregory the Great's letter—many details of her birth, the exact year of her marriage, and the year of her death cannot be fixed with certainty. She has long been venerated as a saint in Catholic and Anglican calendars, and her feast is commonly kept on 1 May. Her historical importance lies less in a large body of personal anecdote than in her role as a Christian queen whose marriage, chapel, and patronage helped open Kent, and through Kent much of England, to the Roman mission.
