Biography

Short Description

Bertharius (also known as Bertario, and in some older literature Berthaire) was a ninth-century Benedictine monk, abbot of Monte Cassino, Latin author, and martyr. Medieval Cassinese tradition describes him as belonging to a noble family of Lombard origin, but no contemporary source preserves a verifiable birthplace or an exact year of birth, and later guesses such as a date around 810 remain unconfirmed. He entered the Abbey of Monte Cassino, the monastery founded by Saint Benedict of Nursia on the mountain above the later town of Cassino, in southern Italy. There he was formed in the Rule of Saint Benedict and in the liturgical and scholarly culture that the abbey maintained through the early Middle Ages, in a region then contested among Lombard princes, residual Byzantine authority, and Carolingian claims.

By the middle of the ninth century Bertharius had been elected abbot of Monte Cassino, an office he is generally held to have occupied from the 850s until his death. House chronicles and later historians remember him as both an administrator and a man of letters. He composed Latin verse and hymns, including pieces connected with Saint Scholastica and the Cassinese sanctoral, as well as sermons and other ecclesiastical writings, and thus stands in the line of learned Cassinese abbots of the Carolingian age who copied books, cultivated poetry, and kept the abbey’s school and library alive. His government coincided with growing insecurity: Muslim expeditions from Sicily and from mainland bases, together with the wars of local princes, repeatedly threatened wealthy monasteries in Campania and the old duchy of Benevento.

In 883 a Saracen force struck Monte Cassino itself. The attackers, associated in the sources with raiding groups that used footholds such as the Garigliano and other points in Campania, sacked and burned the abbey. Cassinese historical tradition, written down later by chroniclers including Leo Marsicanus (Leo of Ostia), records that Abbot Bertharius did not flee. He was killed on 22 October 883, the date received in the martyrological tradition, while at prayer or at the altar—often specified as the altar of Saint Martin in the church of San Salvatore at the foot of the mountain. Other monks were slain; a remnant of the community escaped with relics and books, first to Teano, where a later fire damaged part of what they had saved, and afterward to Capua. The mountain monastery itself remained in ruins until it was restored in the tenth century under Abbot Aligern.

The Church has honored Bertharius as a martyr because he remained with his community and was slain in the violent destruction of a Christian monastery at prayer. His feast is kept on 22 October. After Monte Cassino was rebuilt, his memory was cultivated there; relics attributed to him have been preserved and venerated at the abbey. He appears in monastic martyrologies and in the Cassinese calendar of saints alongside Benedict, Scholastica, and later abbots. Because the early biographical record is thin and depends largely on later house chronicles and liturgy, many details of his youth, the precise year of his election, and the full extent of his literary work cannot be established with certainty. What is securely attested is that he was a ninth-century abbot of Monte Cassino, a Latin writer in the Benedictine tradition, and the principal victim of the Saracen sack that closed the first great period of the abbey’s life on the mountain.
