Biography

Short Description

Bertrand of Saint-Geniès (French: Bertrand de Saint-Geniès; also called Bertram of St. Genesius and, in Italian sources, Bertrando di San Genesio) was a French canon lawyer, papal official, and Latin Patriarch of Aquileia in the first half of the fourteenth century. He was born at Saint-Geniès in Quercy, in southwestern France, of the local nobility, at an uncertain date in the later thirteenth century. After legal studies he taught law at the University of Toulouse. He then entered the service of the Avignon papacy, serving as a papal chaplain and as an auditor of the Roman Rota, the chief appellate court of the Holy See. In 1334 Pope John XXII appointed him Patriarch of Aquileia, a Latin see whose holder was both metropolitan of a large ecclesiastical province in northeastern Italy and temporal prince of Friuli (the Patria del Friuli).

The patriarchate he inherited was politically fragile. Friulian magnates enjoyed wide independence; neighbouring powers, including the counts of Gorizia and the Habsburgs, pressed on its borders; and earlier strife had weakened patriarchal government. Bertrand, a foreigner imposed from Avignon, set out to restore the see’s authority. He reorganized finances and administration, asserted feudal and jurisdictional rights, convened synods, and issued statutes for church and temporal domain. Contemporary and later accounts depict him as a severe, energetic ruler who tried to curb noble violence and to protect lesser subjects, and as a legally trained prelate rather than a member of a religious order. He remained a secular cleric throughout his career.

Those same policies, together with resentment of an outsider patriarch, produced a lasting aristocratic opposition. A conspiracy of Friulian nobles formed against him. On 6 June 1350, while travelling in the Friulian countryside, he was ambushed and killed at San Giorgio della Richinvelda (Richinvelda). Supporters treated the killing as martyrdom. His body was taken to Udine, the ordinary residence of the patriarchs in this period, and buried in the cathedral. He was succeeded by Nicholas of Luxembourg.

In Friuli a local cult grew around Bertrand as a holy patriarch and martyr, associated with the date of his death. He was not the subject of a formal canonization or beatification of the later Roman type, and he does not belong to the general calendar of the Latin Church on the strength of a papal decree that can be named with certainty. His historical reputation rests on his legal learning, his reforming government of Aquileia, and the violent death that made him a figure of regional religious memory.
