Biography

Short Description

Bertrand of Comminges, often called Bertrand de l'Isle after his family seat, was a bishop of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries in the Pyrenean foothills of Gascony. He was born in the mid-eleventh century at L'Isle-Jourdain, in what is now the Gers, into a noble house of local lords; his father Atton held that lordship. He received a clerical education, almost certainly at the cathedral school of Toulouse, and entered the Church as a canon of the cathedral of Saint-Étienne there. He later served as archdeacon of Toulouse, a senior office that placed him among the collaborators of that see during the age of Gregorian Reform. He remained a secular cleric rather than a member of a religious order, and there is no record of marriage or children.

In the later eleventh century he was chosen bishop of Comminges, a very old see whose episcopal city, the former Roman Lugdunum Convenarum, had long been in decline after invasions, depopulation, and neglect. As bishop he worked in the spirit of contemporary papal reform: he opposed simony, sought to enforce clerical celibacy, recovered church property, and tried to restrain the violence of local lords in a mountainous frontier diocese. He is remembered as a preacher and as a pastor of the poor. He rebuilt the cathedral on a Romanesque plan and encouraged the revival of the settlement around it; that town later took his name and is known as Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.

Bertrand governed the diocese for several decades across the turn of the twelfth century, in the era of the First Crusade and of continuing efforts to reform the Western Church. Surviving sources do not always allow a secure list of the councils he attended, and later hagiography added miracle stories that cannot be independently verified. What is firm is the material legacy of his episcopate: the Romanesque cathedral he raised became the liturgical heart of the diocese and, after his death, the centre of his cult. He died on 16 October 1123 and was buried in that church.

Veneration grew around his tomb. In the early fourteenth century Pope Clement V, himself a Gascon, confirmed the cult; traditional accounts date a formal canonization to 1309, during a papal visit connected with the translation of the relics. Pilgrimage to the shrine helped prompt a later Gothic enlargement of the cathedral, which still dominates the hill. Bertrand's feast is kept on 16 October. He remains identified with the town and former diocese of Comminges, and the great church at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is the principal monument of his life and cult.
