Biography

Short Description

Saint Beuno (also known as Beunor or Bono) was a seventh-century Welsh abbot and confessor whose cult became one of the most important in medieval north Wales. The principal narrative of his life is the Welsh Buchedd Beuno, preserved in later medieval manuscripts rather than in any contemporary record, so the details of his career must be treated as hagiographical tradition rather than as independently documented history. That Life places his birth in the kingdom of Powys, at a site named Banhenic that later writers identified with Berriew. He is described as the son of Bugi (or Hywyg) and of Peren, a daughter of Lleuddun Luyddog of the north, and thus as a man of princely Powysian descent. No reliable source records the year of his birth.

After a monastic education and ordination to the priesthood, Beuno is said to have received land in Powys and to have established an early church there. The Life then has him leave that region because of disputes over land and the violence of local rulers, and move into Gwynedd. There he obtained grants from the kings of Gwynedd, including Cadfan and Cadwallon, and eventually settled at Clynnog Fawr on the coast of Arfon. At Clynnog he founded a monastery, or clas, which grew into a major ecclesiastical centre with extensive estates. Numerous churches in north-west Wales, especially in Arfon and on the Llŷn peninsula, were later dedicated to him or claimed him as founder, among them sites at Pistyll, Nefyn, Botwnnog, Carnguwch, and Tydweiliog.

Hagiography attributes to Beuno a series of miracles, the most famous of which concerns his niece, Saint Winifred (Gwenfrewy). When she was beheaded by a rejected suitor named Caradog, Beuno is said to have restored her to life; a spring, later the great pilgrimage well of Holywell in Flintshire, was believed to have risen where her head had fallen. Other stories tell of his raising the dead, cursing unjust rulers, and protecting his community. Such narratives belong to the conventions of Celtic saints' Lives and cannot be verified as historical events, but they shaped his medieval reputation as a wonder-worker and protector of the weak, and they explain later folk invocations of him on behalf of sick children.

Beuno is traditionally held to have died at Clynnog Fawr on 21 April, the date kept as his feast, in the year 640. He was buried at the church that bears his name. In the Middle Ages his shrine at Clynnog attracted pilgrims from across Wales; the clas was wealthy, and a distinctive chest was used to receive offerings at the tomb. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense, but he was venerated as a saint from an early period. His cult remained strongly local to north Wales. St Beuno's Church at Clynnog Fawr, with the separate chapel that once housed his relics, is the principal monument to his memory.
