Biography
Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami, born Pramod Bhushan Chakravarti, was a twentieth-century Gaudiya Vaishnava acharya and the founder of the Sri Gopinatha Gaudiya Math. He was born on 18 October 1898 in the village of Ganganandapur in Jessore district, then in the Bengal Presidency of British India and now in Bangladesh. He came from a landowning family and received a conventional education while developing an early attraction to Vaishnava devotion in the line of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In the early 1920s he came into contact with the Gaudiya Math and its founder, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, from whom he received initiation. From that time he devoted himself to his guru's mission rather than to household life, and he lived thereafter as a celibate monk.
Within the Gaudiya Math he was employed especially in editorial and publishing work, helping to produce journals and books that presented Gaudiya theology, the practice of nama-sankirtana, and the writings of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan. Contemporaries remembered him as learned, retiring, and unusually humble. After Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati died in 1937, the original Gaudiya Math split into several successor missions. Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami continued in the monastic order, later taking sannyasa, and in due course established his own institution, the Sri Gopinatha Gaudiya Math, with its principal ashram at Ishodyan in Sri Mayapur, West Bengal, the traditional appearance place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Additional centres were maintained in Kolkata and elsewhere in India.
He was a godbrother of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, both men having taken initiation from Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati. Across several branches of the Gaudiya family he was treated as a senior authority, not because he built a large organization but because of his reputation for scriptural fidelity, simplicity, and personal realization. His teaching stressed chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, study of the Bhagavata Purana and Chaitanya-charitamrita, and a mood of humble dependence on guru and Krishna rather than institutional ambition.
Bhakti Pramod Puri Goswami died on 22 November 1999 in Sri Mayapur at the age of one hundred and one, one of the last surviving direct disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. His samadhi is at the Gopinatha Gaudiya Math in Mayapur. Followers continue to observe his appearance and disappearance days and to maintain the line of practice he received from his guru.
