Biography

Bianca Piccolomini Clementini was born in Siena, Tuscany, on 7 April 1875, into the Piccolomini Clementini family, a branch of the historic Sienese house of Piccolomini. That lineage had already given the Catholic Church two popes in the fifteenth century, Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) and Pius III. She grew up in an aristocratic Catholic milieu in Siena after the unification of Italy and received a Christian education that oriented her toward a life of faith and service rather than toward a conventional dynastic marriage. She remained unmarried and without children, dedicating herself instead to religious and charitable work among women and girls of her city.

In the early twentieth century she took as her model Saint Angela Merici, the sixteenth-century foundress of the Company of Saint Ursula, whose original charism had been that of consecrated women living in the world and devoted to the Christian education of girls. Drawing on that inspiration, Piccolomini Clementini founded in Siena the Society of Saint Angela Merici (Società di Sant'Angela Merici). The foundation, commonly dated to 1917, in the years of the First World War, was intended especially for the religious, moral, and practical formation of young women, including those of modest means and those employed in factories and workshops. She served as the guiding figure and first superior of the new society and formed its members over several decades while remaining based in her native city.

The Society developed as an association of women committed to prayer, apostolic work, and education in the spirit of Angela Merici, adapted to the social conditions of modern Italy. Piccolomini Clementini’s work belonged to a broader Catholic effort in the first half of the twentieth century to provide Christian formation for women in an industrializing society while preserving a form of consecrated life that was not strictly monastic or cloistered. She directed the society through the interwar years and the Second World War, continuing to reside in Siena until her death.

She died in Siena on 14 August 1959. A cause for her beatification was later introduced in the Catholic Church. On 5 July 2019 Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of a decree recognizing her heroic virtues, by which she was declared Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and no feast day has been assigned to her in the general liturgical calendar. Her memory is preserved in Siena and among the members and associates of the society she founded.
