Biography

Short Description

Benvenuta Bojani, known in French as Bienvenue Bojani and sometimes spelled Boiani, was born in 1254 in Cividale del Friuli, in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy, then within the Patriarchate of Aquileia. She came from the local nobility; her father was Corrado Bojani. She was the youngest of seven daughters. Traditional accounts relate that her parents, after six daughters, had hoped for a son, yet received the seventh child with affection and named her Benvenuta, meaning welcome. Independent evidence for her childhood is lacking; what is known comes chiefly from a life that circulated in the Dominican Order, which presents her as precociously devout.

From an early age she took up a life of penance while remaining in the family household rather than entering a monastery. Hagiographical tradition says she wore a hairshirt from about the age of seven and later an iron girdle, which in time rusted into her flesh and had to be cut away. She became a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, the lay penitential branch of the Order of Preachers, and lived as a consecrated virgin. Her routine consisted of prayer, fasting (often on bread and water), silence, and works of mercy in her native town. Dominican friars of Cividale served as her confessors and spiritual directors. She founded no convent and undertook no public apostolate; her vocation was hidden and contemplative, and she never left Cividale del Friuli.

Medieval and early modern Dominican writers portray her as a mystic. They attribute to her ecstasies, visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Dominic, prophetic insight, and spiritual combats described in the language of demonic temptation typical of thirteenth-century Italian hagiography. She is also said to have suffered grave illness. These reports derive mainly from the Dominican vita and later legendaries and cannot be independently verified in detail, but they shaped her cult. She belongs to the current of lay Dominican penitents and women mystics of thirteenth-century Italy. The historical record remains relatively thin and is filtered through conventional themes of austerity, virginity, and visionary experience.

Benvenuta died in Cividale del Friuli on 30 October 1292, at about thirty-eight years of age. She was buried in the church of the Friars Preachers in that city, and a local cult grew around her tomb. The Dominican Order preserved her memory. In the eighteenth century the Holy See confirmed her public veneration, and she is honored as Blessed Benvenuta Bojani rather than as a formally canonized saint. Her feast is observed on 30 October.
