Biography

Short Description

Bishop Archelaus was a Christian bishop whose see is named in the ancient sources as Caschar, Carchar, or Carrhae in Mesopotamia. He flourished in the later third century, in the period of the Roman emperor Probus (reigned 276–282). The principal independent notice of him is Jerome’s De viris illustribus, which states that Archelaus, bishop of Mesopotamia, wrote a work against Manes (Mani) in Syriac, that the work was translated into Greek, and that Archelaus was active under Probus. No ancient source supplies a verified year of birth or death, a place of birth, or any account of his family, education, or the circumstances of his consecration. His historical profile is therefore almost entirely that of an anti-Manichaean controversialist on the Roman–Sasanian frontier.

According to the Acta Archelai, a heresiological narrative attributed to Hegemonius, Mani came into Mesopotamia after difficulties in the Sasanian Empire and sought to spread his dualist teaching. A local Christian—named in related strands of the tradition as Marcellus or associated with a figure called Diodorus—appealed to Bishop Archelaus, who then met Mani in a public disputation at Caschar. The Acta present Archelaus as arguing from the Christian Scriptures against Manichaean dualism of light and darkness, against the Manichaean rejection or radical reinterpretation of the Old Testament, and against Mani’s claim to be the Paraclete or a final prophet. The narrative concludes that Archelaus was judged the victor and that Mani withdrew. A complete Latin version of the Acta survives, together with Greek fragments; the Latin form is the one through which the work was widely known in the West. Modern scholarship generally dates the composition or substantial redaction of the Acta to the fourth century and notes rhetorical set-pieces and chronological difficulties that caution against reading the debate as a stenographic record of a single historical event, even if a real Mesopotamian bishop named Archelaus, and some real encounter with Manichaeism, may underlie the tradition.

The geography of Archelaus’s episcopate remains debated. Caschar or Carchar has often been identified with Carrhae (Harran) in Osroene, a city of mixed pagan, Jewish, and Christian associations on the upper Balikh near the imperial frontier; other proposals locate the see elsewhere in northern Mesopotamia. In any case the setting is the Syriac-speaking Christianity of the third century, a world in which later structures of the Church of the East were not yet fully formed and in which Manichaean missionaries were active along trade routes. Jerome’s remark that Archelaus wrote in Syriac is consistent with that milieu. No conciliar signature, imperial rescript, or contemporary inscription independently confirms the dates of his tenure.

In later centuries the Acta Archelai became a standard resource for Christian writers describing and refuting Manichaeism. Material connected with Archelaus was used by heresiologists such as Epiphanius of Salamis and entered the broader Greek and Latin polemical tradition. Through that literary afterlife the bishop of Caschar remained a named authority even when the biographical details of his life were no longer recoverable. He is not recorded as Bishop of Rome or as patriarch of one of the great Eastern sees. No reliable evidence documents a spouse or children, membership in a religious order, a place of burial, or a universally received feast day and list of patronages. Formal papal canonization, a later medieval process, does not apply to a third-century Mesopotamian bishop known chiefly from heresiological literature. What can be said with caution is that Archelaus stands in early Christian memory as a defender of the faith against Manichaean dualism in the Mesopotamian church of the later third century.
