Biography

Short Description

Saint Astius (also rendered Astus or Asti) was a Christian bishop of Dyrrachium, the major Adriatic port known in Latin as Dyrrhachium and in Greek as Dyrrhachion, on the site of present-day Durrës in Albania. In the imperial period the city belonged to the Roman province of Macedonia. He is placed by the martyrological tradition in the late first or early second century, during the reign of the emperor Trajan (98–117). Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, education, or the date and manner of his appointment to the see. Surviving notices come from later Latin martyrologies and Greek synaxaria rather than from contemporary letters, inscriptions, or administrative records, so the outline of his life remains that of an early hieromartyr rather than a fully documented biography.

According to the traditional passion account, a Roman governor named Agricola (Agricolaus in some recensions) moved against Christians in the region. Astius was arrested for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods. He was beaten with rods or lead-weighted instruments and then crucified at Dyrrachium. The Roman Martyrology records this martyrdom at Dyrrachium in Macedonia and ascribes it to the time of Trajan, without a precise calendar year. No independent Roman trial record survives, and proposed death years such as 98 or 117 are inferences from Trajan’s reign, not dates established by early dated sources. The account belongs to the genre of early martyr acts and should be read with corresponding caution.

Liturgical tradition links Astius with seven companions often described as Italian Christians or soldiers—Peregrinus, Lucian, Pompeius, Hesychius, Papius, Saturninus, and Germanus—who are said to have come to Dyrrachium, to have been arrested for the faith, and to have been drowned in the sea. Their story is commemorated near his, but the historical connection among these figures cannot be verified from first- or second-century evidence. Astius himself is remembered as a bishop-martyr (hieromartyr) of a strategic Illyrian-Macedonian port, not as pope or patriarch. There is no documented religious order in the later monastic sense, and no reliable evidence concerning marriage or children.

His cult is attested in both East and West. The Orthodox churches commemorate Hieromartyr Astius, Bishop of Dyrrachium, on 6 July; the traditional Roman Martyrology places the notice of Saint Astius, bishop, on 7 July. Because the evidence is late and hagiographical, modern historians cannot reconstruct a detailed career, but the persistence of his name in the calendars and the consistent localization of the passion at Dyrrachium point to an ancient local cult at that city. Place of burial is not securely recorded in the early sources.
