Biography

Short Description

Saint Autonomus (also Autonomos) is commemorated as a bishop and hieromartyr in the Roman Martyrology and in the Eastern Orthodox synaxaria. Hagiographical tradition presents him as an Italian bishop who lived in the late third and early fourth centuries. During the Great Persecution associated with the emperor Diocletian, he left Italy and took refuge in Bithynia in northwestern Asia Minor. The accounts do not preserve a verifiable birth year, birthplace within Italy, or details of his earlier episcopal career, and almost everything known of him derives from later liturgical legend rather than contemporary documents.

In Bithynia he settled at a place called Soreoi or Soreus, near the village of Limnae. There he is said to have preached among the local pagan population, to have made numerous converts, and to have built a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Tradition further relates that he ordained a convert named Cornelius, advancing him from deacon to priest and then to bishop so that the new community would not be left without pastoral care. Autonomus is also described as having traveled inland to preach in Lycaonia and Isauria before returning to Soreus.

Upon that return, remaining pagans attacked him while he was celebrating the Eucharist and killed him with stones and other weapons. The traditional year assigned to the martyrdom is 313, which falls at the close of the persecutions in the East under Maximinus Daia; the date is conventional rather than independently confirmed. A church was later erected over his burial place at Soreus. His cult is ancient: the Roman Martyrology records him on 12 September as bishop and martyr at Soreus in Bithynia, and the Byzantine churches keep the same feast for the Hieromartyr Autonomus, Bishop in Italy.

Beyond these liturgical notices, little can be verified. No reliable evidence survives concerning a spouse, children, membership in a religious order, or later formal canonization by a named pope. He is not recorded as pope or as patriarch of any of the ancient sees. Specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are not securely attached to his name in the major martyrologies. The narrative of his Italian origin, Bithynian mission, and death at the altar remains the core of his dossier, transmitted as pious tradition from late antiquity rather than as recoverable biography.
