Biography

Short Description

Bishop Felician, known in Italian as San Feliciano di Foligno, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a bishop and martyr of the third century associated with the Umbrian city of Foligno. Contemporary third-century documentation for his life does not survive. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that an early Christian community at Foligno preserved the memory of a bishop of that name who suffered in a Roman persecution, and that this memory was already established by the time medieval martyrologies and local liturgical books were compiled. The Roman Martyrology records him on 24 January as bishop of Foligno who, after many labours, received the crown of martyrdom in extreme old age in the persecution of Decius. Decius reigned in the middle of the third century, and his edict requiring sacrifice to the gods is usually dated to about 250, but the martyrology does not furnish a precise calendar year for Felician’s death.

Later Latin acts, commonly judged by hagiographers to be legendary in their details, supply a fuller story that became standard in Foligno. In that tradition Felician was born in the Umbrian neighbourhood of Forum Flaminii, near Foligno, of Christian parents, and was trained in the faith in the later second century. The same sources claim that a bishop of Rome—variously named in the tradition as Eleutherius or Victor—consecrated him for the church of Foligno, making him in local recollection the first bishop of the see. He is said to have preached widely in Umbria, to have occupied the episcopal office for many decades, and to have reached a very advanced age. These claims explain the later artistic type of Felician as an aged bishop, but they cannot be verified independently and should be treated as pious narrative rather than as established chronology. In particular, a birth year sometimes given in popular works is derived from combining the legendary age at death with the Decian date; it is not an independently attested fact.

The passio describes his arrest under Decius, interrogation, and torture. Medieval and baroque iconography of Foligno often shows the aged bishop with nails or similar instruments of torment, reflecting those episodes. He is said to have died of his sufferings rather than by a single public execution, and the church of Foligno has always claimed his tomb. A historical reading consistent with the evidence is that a bishop of Foligno named Felician died as a martyr in the mid-third century, most probably in connection with the Decian measures against the Church, and that his grave became a local shrine. Claims of an exact day of death beyond the liturgical date, or of a journey to Rome for trial, rest on the later acts and remain uncertain.

The centre of his cult is the cathedral of Foligno, dedicated to him as San Feliciano, where relics associated with the saint are kept in the crypt. A translation of relics is recorded in the tenth century during the episcopate of Bishop Berard of Foligno, an event that strengthened the civic character of the cult. Felician is the principal patron of the city and of the Diocese of Foligno; his feast on 24 January has long been a major local observance. He does not appear to have acquired a large number of additional, well-documented patronages of trades, illnesses, or distant places. His canonization was of the ancient type: public cult from time immemorial, later recognized by the martyrologies, rather than a formal process conducted by a medieval or modern pope. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold a patriarchal see.

Felician therefore stands as an Umbrian bishop-martyr of the third century whose historical outline is modest and whose legendary biography is rich. There is no reliable evidence that he belonged to a religious order in the later canonical sense, nor that he was married or had children; early Italian episcopal lives of this kind typically present their subjects as lifelong clerics, but that presentation is itself a hagiographical convention. For the historian, the secure facts are the place (Foligno in Umbria), the office (bishop), the character of his death (martyrdom remembered in connection with Decius), the antiquity of the cult, the feast on 24 January, and his continuing patronage of Foligno. For the faithful of that city he remains the founding shepherd and protector whose relics rest in the cathedral that bears his name.
