Biography

Short Description

Saint Germanus of Auxerre was a Gallo-Roman bishop of the fifth century, among the best-attested prelates of late antique Gaul and the principal figure usually meant by the title Bishop Germanus in Western hagiography. He was born at Auxerre (Roman Autissiodorum) in Lugdunensis to a family of senatorial standing. After a literary education in Gaul he studied law at Rome and entered imperial service. The Life written later in the same century by Constantius of Lyon records that he held high office, generally understood as a military governorship or ducatus, and that he was married before taking holy orders; the wife’s name is not given in that early source. Around 418 Bishop Amator of Auxerre tonsured and ordained him and named him successor. Germanus then occupied the see of Auxerre for roughly three decades. As bishop he adopted an austere personal regime, disposed of much of his property, and founded a monastery dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian across the Yonne from the city, where clergy lived a common life of prayer.

In 429 a synod of bishops in Gaul sent Germanus, together with Lupus of Troyes, to Britain to oppose Pelagian teaching among the Romano-British elite. Prosper of Aquitaine states that Pope Celestine I authorized the mission. Constantius describes public debates in which the two bishops defended the Catholic doctrine of grace, and he also recounts the so-called Alleluia Victory, in which Germanus, after baptizing a British force, is said to have scattered an attacking host of Saxons and Picts by a shout of Alleluia. Historians generally accept the visit as historical while treating the military episode with caution. Germanus later acted as an intermediary between provincial populations and imperial or barbarian authorities in Gaul, including negotiations connected with the Armorican Bacaudae and with Alan federates under their king Goar. Constantius reports a second journey to Britain, less securely dated and often placed in the 440s, this time with Severus of Trier, again against residual Pelagianism.

In his last years Germanus travelled to the imperial court at Ravenna to plead for clemency toward the Armoricans after unrest. He was received by the emperor Valentinian III and the empress Galla Placidia. He died at Ravenna on the traditional date of 31 July 448. His body was brought back to Auxerre and buried in an oratory that developed into the Abbey of Saint-Germain, which remained the centre of his cult. Because he belongs to the age of popular episcopal cults rather than later papal processes, no decree of canonization or beatification by a named pope is recorded.

His reputation spread through Gaul and, after Bede incorporated Constantius’s Life into the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, through Anglo-Saxon and medieval Britain. Churches in France, England, Wales, and Cornwall were dedicated to him, and the Cornish town of St Germans preserves his name. His principal feast is 31 July. He must be distinguished from other holy bishops of the same name, especially Germanus of Paris in the sixth century and Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople in the eighth; the subject of this notice is the fifth-century bishop of Auxerre.
