Biography

Short Description

The designation “Bishop Mark” does not identify a single, uniquely documented historical person. Mark (Latin Marcus; Greek Markos) has been among the most common episcopal names in Christian history from late antiquity to the present, appearing in the Roman, Byzantine, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Slavic, and later Latin and Protestant episcopates. Without a see, century, communion, or other disambiguating identifier—none of which is supplied here—no birth year, death year, place of origin, burial, patronage, or canonical status can be assigned without substituting one well-known namesake for another. Doing so would violate the requirement not to guess.

Several frequently confused figures illustrate why a blank record is required. Tradition ascribes to Mark the Evangelist the foundation of the church of Alexandria and thus an episcopal (later patriarchal) role in Egypt, but his dates of birth and death are not established by contemporary evidence, and he is not customarily styled simply “Bishop Mark.” Pope Mark (Marcus), Bishop of Rome for part of the year 336, is a distinct fourth-century figure whose natal year is unknown. Mark of Ephesus (fifteenth century), a metropolitan who opposed union with Rome at the Council of Florence, is another frequently cited “Bishop Mark,” again with a career and chronology that cannot be transferred to an unspecified subject. Still other Marks held sees at Jerusalem, Arethusa, Ottranto, and many lesser places; modern Orthodox, Catholic, and Anglican bishops have borne the same name.

Because the subject cannot be matched to a reliable biographical article, liturgical calendar entry, or other primary or standard secondary source, fields that demand a verified fact—year of birth as distinct from year of consecration, cities of birth and death, burial place, religious order, marital and parental status, papal or patriarchal office, feast day, patronages, and names of those who beatified or canonized the person—are left empty. Early episcopal lives are especially prone to the error of treating an accession date as a birth date; that substitution is refused here.

In short, “Bishop Mark” as given is a title-plus-name, not a documented individual. A careful hagiographical or historical notice can only record the ambiguity, decline to invent a life, and wait for a see, dates, or other identifier that would allow the record to be filled from verifiable sources rather than from conflation of homonymous bishops.
