Biography

Short Description

Saint Monas (also rendered Mona in Italian sources) was a bishop of Milan in northern Italy in the late third and early fourth centuries. He is traditionally counted as the sixth bishop of that see, in succession to Saint Calimerius. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. The principal early literary witness is Magnus Felix Ennodius, the late fifth- and early sixth-century bishop of Pavia, who composed verse elogia on the bishops of Milan and recorded that Monas was chosen to govern the Milanese church while he was still a layman. That detail was later taken up in the Roman Martyrology. No writings by Monas survive, and no contemporary narrative of his administration, ordinations, or death has been preserved.

Later medieval catalogues of the archbishops of Milan assign him an episcopate running from the early 280s until about 313, a span that would have included the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Galerius and the subsequent shift in imperial policy associated with Constantine and Licinius. Those catalogue dates are schematic reconstructions and cannot be independently verified; modern historians treat the chronology of the Milanese bishops before the mid-fourth century as largely conjectural. Milan (Mediolanum) was in this period an imperial residence, notably under Maximian, so the local Christian community would have been exposed both to the pressures of persecution and to the political changes that followed. The so-called Edict of Milan of 313 is named for the city, but no early source ties Monas personally to that settlement of church affairs, and even his presence in office at that moment remains unproven.

The cult of Monas is ancient in Milan and is attested by his place in the Ambrosian liturgical tradition as well as in the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates him on 12 October. According to Milanese tradition his body was first laid to rest in one of the city’s early Christian basilicas and his relics were later translated to the cathedral, where they have been venerated together with those of other early bishops of the see. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his sainthood rests on the ancient and continuous cultus of the Church of Milan. He is not recorded as a member of a religious order, and there is no early evidence concerning a spouse or children.

Beyond the fact of his episcopate, the lay election recorded by Ennodius, and the later liturgical cult, the historical record is silent. Claims sometimes found in later hagiography that supply a birthplace, a precise year of death, or miracle stories attached to his election are not supported by early evidence and should be regarded as legendary or as products of medieval elaboration. The Church of Milan would later become famous through Saint Ambrose in the later fourth century; Monas belongs to the poorly documented succession that preceded that better-attested age.
