Biography

Short Description

The designation Bishop Peter does not identify a single, uniquely documented historical person. Peter, from the Greek Petros meaning rock, has been among the most common episcopal names in Christian history, chosen in honor of the apostle Simon Peter. Without a diocese or see, a century, a linguistic form of the name such as Pierre, Pietro, Pedro, Petros, or Boutros, or another disambiguating epithet, no birth year, death year, birthplace, or burial site can be verified. Substituting the year a man took office for a birth year, or attaching the life of a famous namesake to an unspecified subject, would be historically unsound.

Bishops named Peter appear across the early church, the medieval Latin West, Byzantium, the Oriental Orthodox churches, and later Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant episcopates. Well-attested examples include Peter of Alexandria, a third-to-early-fourth-century bishop of that see who was martyred in the Diocletianic persecution; Peter of Sebaste, a fourth-century Cappadocian bishop and brother of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa; and many later diocesan bishops known only from local chronicles, episcopal catalogues, or necrologies. Each of these men had a distinct career, date range, and place of ministry. None of them can be assigned, on present evidence, to an unspecified Bishop Peter.

Because the subject cannot be matched to one person in the historical record, statements about marriage, children, religious order, papal or patriarchal office, canonization, feast day, or patronage would be conjecture. In the Latin Church, episcopal celibacy became the expected discipline over the course of the first millennium, but earlier bishops and bishops in some Eastern traditions could be married; that general pattern does not establish the status of an unidentified individual. Likewise, some men named Peter held the see of Rome or an Eastern patriarchal throne, while the great majority of bishops named Peter did not.

Hagiography and episcopal biography require a named see, a reliably attested floruit, or a distinct epithet before a life can be written with dates and places. Until such identifiers are supplied, the responsible course is to leave biographical fields empty rather than to graft the documented life of one well-known Peter onto a request that does not name him.
