Biography

Short Description

Bishop Siridion does not appear under this exact spelling in the principal printed hagiographical corpora, episcopal catalogues, or liturgical books of the Latin, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, or Ethiopian traditions. Searches of the Roman Martyrology, the Synaxarion of Constantinople, Butler’s Lives of the Saints, the Bibliotheca Sanctorum, standard lists of the bishops of Rome, and the known patriarchal successions of Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, Jerusalem, and the Church of the East yield no prelate whose name is securely transmitted as Siridion. No conciliar subscription, dated inscription, or medieval necrology that can be checked from ordinary historical reference works attaches this form of the name to a see, a century, or a cult.

The nearest well-attested names are not close enough to justify identification. Pope Siricius of Rome (late fourth century) is a different name and office. Saint Spyridon of Trimythous in Cyprus, often written Spiridion in Latin and French sources, is a fourth-century bishop whose biography is comparatively full, but the initial consonant cluster and the established Greek form Spyridōn do not license treating “Siridion” as a mere variant without manuscript evidence. Other remote resemblances (Syrus of Pavia, various Isidore bishops, desert fathers with similar-sounding names) likewise fail on both phonology and documented title. Substituting any of those lives would be conjecture, not verification.

Because the subject cannot be fixed to a region or a century, nothing reliable can be said about birth or death, burial, religious order, family, patronage, or liturgical commemoration. Complete lists of popes and of the major patriarchs/catholicoi do not include this name, so those particular offices can be excluded; every other biographical field remains unknown. Local calendars, unpublished cartularies, or inscriptions not yet in the standard literature could in principle preserve an otherwise forgotten Bishop Siridion; until such a source is produced and assessed, the figure stays historically unverified and no dates or places should be supplied.
