Biography

Short Description

Bishop Veran, known in Latin as Veranus and in French as Saint Véran (sometimes Vrain), was bishop of Cavaillon in Provence in the second half of the sixth century. The see of Cavaillon, ancient Cabellio, lay in the lower Rhône country, then under Merovingian rule and now in the French department of Vaucluse. No contemporary text records his date or place of birth, his family, or his education. The secure chronological anchors are two. A bishop Veranus of Cavaillon subscribed the acts of the Council of Paris in 573. Gregory of Tours, writing in the same generation, includes him among the holy confessors of Gaul and attests a living reputation for sanctity. Later medieval lives, written long after his death, supply childhood tales, voyages, and miracle cycles that cannot be controlled by early evidence and should not be read as biography.

Local tradition, already medieval, places a hermit sojourn at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the great karst spring of the river Sorgue a short distance from Cavaillon. The cliff-circled pool became the chief extra-urban sanctuary linked to his name. Whether that eremitical stay preceded his election or was a retreat during the episcopate cannot be decided from sixth-century sources. As bishop he governed a modest Provençal diocese in a period of Frankish civil conflict and recurrent epidemic. Nothing reliable indicates a wife or children. Gallic bishops formed in monastic or eremitical milieux were expected to live in continence, and Veranus is remembered in that pattern. Gregory does not write a full life, but his notice shows that by the later sixth century Veranus was already counted among the saints of Gaul.

Legend later made him the deliverer of the Sorgue spring from a dragon called the Coulobre, a tale that shaped his iconography and the popular pilgrimage at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Dragon-slaying stories are common among early bishops of Gaul and Italy and do not appear in Gregory of Tours. Other miracles of healing, often tied to oil or to the waters of the spring, gathered around his tomb. His death is customarily placed near 590, but that year is conventional, not documented. He was buried at Cavaillon. The cathedral there, historically co-dedicated to Notre-Dame and Saint-Véran, remained the centre of the cult. In the Middle Ages relics were divided and translated, which explains a substantial Italian cultus of San Verano, especially in Tuscany, with a notable focus at Peccioli.

The Roman Martyrology and the diocesan calendars keep his feast on 11 November. He is the patron saint of Cavaillon. The high Alpine commune of Saint-Véran in the Queyras (Hautes-Alpes) takes its name from him and has long invoked him as a protector of the mountain and pastoral community. Historians must separate this sixth-century bishop of Cavaillon from Saint Veranus of Vence, a fifth-century bishop, son of Eucherius of Lyon and brother of Salonius of Geneva, formed at Lérins. The two have sometimes shared feast days in later martyrologies, which has produced confusion in popular notices. Neither was pope or patriarch. Veranus of Cavaillon belongs to the age of locally venerated episcopal saints whose cults were received by the Church well before the later medieval process of papal canonization.
