Biography

Short Description

The name Castus belongs to more than one early Christian bishop, and later liturgical and local traditions have not always kept those figures apart. Because the evidence is sparse, late, and in several cases legendary, a single verified life cannot be reconstructed. The principal hagiographical subject is Saint Castus, remembered as a bishop of ancient Cales (modern Calvi Risorta) in Campania and commonly paired with Saint Secundinus. A related but not identical Campanian cult venerates Saints Castus and Cassius as bishop-martyrs linked with Capua and Maddaloni. Separately, a bishop named Castus of Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) is historically attested at the Council of Arles in 314. None of these men has a documented year of birth. Later writers who assign a precise martyrdom under Diocletian, or a flight from Vandal Africa, are repeating traditions that historians treat with caution and that should not be converted into firm biographical dates.

The most secure contemporary notice is the subscription of Castus, bishop of Zaragoza, at the Council of Arles, convened under Constantine in 314 to deal with the Donatist controversy. He is recorded together with his deacon Liberalis. Beyond that attendance, fourth-century sources do not describe his origins, family, pastoral work, or death. The year of the council is neither a birth year nor proof of the year he took office. This Spanish bishop should not automatically be identified with the Campanian saints of the same name.

In Campania, the cult of Saint Castus as bishop of Calvi is of real local antiquity, even though the written legends are late. One strand of tradition makes Castus and Secundinus African prelates who crossed to Italy during the Vandal persecution of Catholic bishops in the fifth century and were then given sees in the region of Cales and Teanum. Another strand, following the usual pattern of Diocletianic martyr-acts, places their deaths in the early fourth century. Neither chronology is supported by contemporary documents. Their feast has been kept on 1 July in the former diocese of Calvi and in the later combined diocese of Teano-Calvi. Relics attributed to them have been claimed by the cathedral of Calvi Risorta, and Castus, with Secundinus, is invoked as patron of that town. A parallel cult of Saints Castus and Cassius, likewise called bishops and martyrs, is centered on Maddaloni and the Capuan church; some versions of their acts even make them disciples of the apostle Peter. Those acts are not historically reliable.

Saints Castus and Aemilius, commemorated on 22 May, belong to a different dossier and should not be merged with the Campanian bishops. Saint Cyprian of Carthage mentions them as African martyrs of the Decian persecution who at first lapsed and later recovered their confession and died by fire; he does not call them bishops. Later calendars and some Italian observances have occasionally mixed this African pair with the Campanian bishop-saints, which has added to the confusion of names.

Taken together, the evidence supports only modest conclusions. A bishop named Castus served at Zaragoza in the early fourth century. Separate, poorly documented episcopal cults of a Saint Castus developed in Campania, where he is remembered as bishop and, in legend, as a martyr, and where he remains a local patron, especially of Calvi Risorta. Birthplace, family, marital status, religious order, and a verified year and place of death are unknown. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not apply to these early cults, which rest on popular and diocesan veneration rather than on a surviving process of canonization.
