Biography

Short Description

Saint Donatian (Latin Donatianus; French Donatien) was a bishop of Reims in the later fourth century and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. He appears in the traditional episcopal lists of Reims as one of the early successors of that see, commonly numbered as the seventh or eighth bishop, in the generations after Imbetausius of Reims, who attended the Council of Arles in 314, and before Saint Nicasius, who was killed in the early fifth century. No contemporary letter, inscription, or conciliar signature that can be assigned to Donatian with certainty has survived. The principal narrative source for the early bishops of Reims is the tenth-century History of the Church of Reims by Flodoard, which transmits older local tradition rather than fourth-century archives. A date of death in 389 is widely given in later martyrologies and episcopal catalogues; it should be treated as conventional rather than as a date fixed by a contemporary record.

Later medieval hagiography described Donatian as a Roman by birth and as a member of a senatorial family who was sent into Gaul and raised to the see of Reims. That portrait cannot be confirmed from independent fourth-century evidence, and it follows a familiar pattern in Gallic episcopal legend, in which early bishops are given distinguished Roman origins. What is historically secure is the importance of Reims (Durocortorum) as the civil and ecclesiastical centre of Belgica Secunda. Donatian’s ministry, whatever its personal details, belonged to the settled Christian order of fourth-century Gaul, after Constantine and before the collapse of the Rhine frontier. Nothing authentic is known of his preaching, synodal activity, or writings.

Donatian’s cult became of European importance through the translation of his relics. In the mid-ninth century, during the period of Scandinavian raids on the Frankish kingdoms, relics identified as those of Saint Donatian were removed from Reims and brought to Bruges in Flanders. The year 863 is the date most often assigned to this translation. At Bruges a collegiate church of Saint Donatian was established; it became the chief church of the city and, after the creation of the diocese of Bruges in the sixteenth century, its cathedral. The medieval cathedral of Saint Donatian was destroyed in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Relics of the saint are preserved today in the Cathedral of the Saviour (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal) in Bruges. Through this Flemish cult Donatian, an otherwise obscure bishop of Reims, became the patron saint of Bruges.

His principal feast is kept on 14 October, the date associated in Flanders with the saint and with the memory of the translation of his relics. Other days have appeared in local calendars. Donatian was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his veneration is of the ancient, pre-congregational kind. A distinct fourth-century bishop of the same name, Saint Donatian of Châlons-sur-Marne (Châlons-en-Champagne), is commemorated on 7 August and should not be confused with the bishop of Reims. Beyond the episcopal lists, the relic translation, and the long civic devotion of Bruges, the personal biography of Donatian of Reims remains largely unknown.
