Biography

Short Description

Saint Torquatus (Latin Torquatus; Spanish Torcuato), also called Torquatus of Acci, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a bishop of the apostolic age of Spanish Christianity. According to a tradition preserved in Mozarabic liturgical texts and later medieval hagiography, he was one of the Seven Apostolic Men (septem viri apostolici), a group of seven clerics said to have been ordained in Rome by the Apostles Peter and Paul and sent to evangelize the Roman province of Hispania. The seven named in the cycle are Torquatus, Ctesiphon, Secundus, Indaletius, Caecilius, Hesychius, and Euphrasius. Torquatus was assigned to Acci, identified with present-day Guadix in the province of Granada in Andalusia, and local and liturgical tradition regards him as the first bishop of that see. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 15 May at Guadix, together with the other six.

No contemporary first-century source mentions Torquatus or his companions, and modern historians treat the legend of the Seven Apostolic Men with caution. The story appears to have taken literary and liturgical form in the early Middle Ages, very likely in order to furnish several Andalusian churches with an apostolic foundation comparable to other regional origin legends. Southern Spain did have Christian communities by the third century, as the Council of Elvira and other evidence show, but the specific names, a Roman ordination by Peter and Paul, and a strictly first-century chronology cannot be confirmed from independent ancient documents. A careful account therefore distinguishes the cult and the medieval narrative from what can be established as historical fact: a bishop named Torquatus was remembered from an early date as founder of the church of Acci, and his feast was established in Spanish and Roman calendars.

Hagiographical accounts describe the missionaries encountering pagan opposition and working conversions in their assigned cities. Some versions of Torquatus’s story present him as a martyr, though the Martyrology entry itself does not explicitly style him a martyr. Tradition holds that he died at Acci and was buried there. His relics have been associated with Guadix through the medieval and early modern periods; as with many Spanish saints, stories of concealment or translation of relics during the Islamic period in al-Andalus also circulated. A parish church in Guadix is dedicated to San Torcuato, and he remains the principal patron of the city and of the Diocese of Guadix (Guadix-Baza). Outside that local cult he is known chiefly as one of the seven commemorated on 15 May.

Because almost every biographical particular rests on later legend rather than on verifiable contemporary record, dates of birth and death, place of birth, family, and the precise circumstances of his episcopate cannot be given. What can be stated is that the Church has honored Torquatus as a saint of the evangelization of Hispania, that his see is identified with Guadix, and that his feast, shared with the other Apostolic Men, has been observed on 15 May in the Roman Martyrology and in Spanish liturgical use. Devotion to him continues above all in Guadix and its diocese.
