Biography
Maria Magdalena Merten was born on 10 July 1883 in the village of Düppenweiler in the Saar region of the German Empire, into a Catholic farming family. She was one of several children and received a conventional rural Catholic upbringing of the late nineteenth century. After her schooling she trained as a teacher and worked in that profession in her native region in the opening years of the twentieth century. A sister of hers entered the Ursuline convent, and Maria Magdalena herself came to discern a religious vocation in the same order.
In 1908 she entered the Ursuline convent of Calvarienberg near Ahrweiler in the Rhineland. She received the religious name Sister Blandine, after the early Christian martyr Blandina of Lyon. As an Ursuline she lived the order’s mixed life of prayer and apostolate, teaching children at the convent school while observing the community’s rule of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Those who knew her later recalled her gentleness, her devotion to the Eucharist and to the Virgin Mary, and her fidelity in ordinary duties rather than any public or extraordinary office.
In 1916 she contracted tuberculosis. Her health declined over the following months, and she was transferred to the Ursuline house in Trier. She continued to accept her illness with patience, offering her suffering in a spirit of religious resignation typical of the piety of her time and order. She died in Trier on 18 May 1918, at the age of thirty-four, during the final year of the First World War.
A local reputation for holiness persisted after her death. She was first buried in the cemetery of St. Paulin in Trier; in 1954 her remains were transferred to the Ursuline convent church in that city. The cause for her beatification was introduced in due course, and on 1 November 1987 Pope John Paul II beatified her in Saint Peter’s Square. The Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Blandine Merten on 18 May. She has not been canonized.
