Biography

Short Description

Blessed Gerard, known in later traditions under several surnames and local identifications including Gerard Sasso, Gérard de Martigues, Gerard Thom, and Gerard Tenque, was the founder of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, later called the Knights Hospitaller. His birthplace and year of birth are not established by contemporary evidence. Amalfitan tradition has long claimed that he came from Scala on the Amalfi coast, a region whose merchants maintained a Latin hospice in Jerusalem before the First Crusade. A competing Provençal tradition associates him with Martigues in southern France. Historians treat both claims as unproven. What is reasonably secure is that by the later eleventh century he was in Jerusalem and connected with the hospice that Amalfitan merchants had established near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, beside the Benedictine house of Santa Maria Latina, to care for poor and sick Latin pilgrims under Fatimid and then Seljuk rule.

When the First Crusade took Jerusalem in 1099, Gerard was already in the city and in charge of that hospital. The new Latin Kingdom brought a sharp rise in pilgrimage and in the numbers of wounded and destitute Westerners needing care. Under his direction the house grew rapidly in size, resources, and reputation, attracting gifts of property in the East and in Europe. Near-contemporary narrative, including the account of William of Tyre, presents him as a man of piety and practical ability who shaped a community of brothers devoted to the poor and the sick. The hospital’s work in this period remained primarily charitable and medical rather than military.

In 1113 Pope Paschal II issued the bull Pie postulatio voluntatis, addressed to Gerard as founder and superior of the Hospital in Jerusalem. The bull recognized the Hospital as an independent religious institute under papal protection, confirmed its possessions, and allowed the brothers to elect Gerard’s successors freely. That act is conventionally treated as the foundation charter of the Order of Saint John. Gerard thus stood at the head of a vowed community whose original purpose was hospitality and care of the sick, though the order would take on military duties in defence of pilgrims and the Crusader states more fully under his successor.

Gerard died in Jerusalem in 1120 and was succeeded by Raymond du Puy, who gave the order more developed statutes and a stronger military character. He was buried in Jerusalem, in connection with the Hospital. He has been venerated as Blessed in the Catholic Church, above all within the Order of Saint John and its later branches, including the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which keeps his feast on 13 October. No formal canonization process of the later medieval or modern type is recorded for him; the cult rests on continuous veneration as founder. The institution he organized became one of the principal military-religious orders of the Crusader East, later based in Rhodes and then Malta, and it survives in several successor bodies devoted to medical and charitable work.
