Biography

Short Description

Bobuleno of Bobbio, also recorded as Bobolenus, Bobolen, or Boboleno, was a seventh-century monk and abbot of the monastery founded by Saint Columbanus at Bobbio in the Trebbia valley of the northern Italian Apennines. Later Bobbio tradition describes him as a Frank by origin, but no contemporary source gives a birthplace, a birth year, or a family. The abbey itself had been established in 614, when the Lombard king Agilulf and Queen Theodelinda granted Columbanus a ruined church and lands at Bobbio. Columbanus died there in 615 and was succeeded as abbot by Saint Attala (died 627) and then by Saint Bertulf (died 640). Bobuleno became the fourth abbot after Bertulf’s death. In his time the community still lived by the austere Rule of Saint Columbanus and occupied a distinctive place as an Irish-founded house under Lombard royal protection.

The most securely attested fact of his abbacy is his connection with the Vita Sancti Columbani. Jonas of Bobbio, a monk who had entered the community under Attala and who later travelled among Columbanian houses in the Frankish kingdoms, states that he wrote the work at the urging of Abbot Bobuleno and of the brethren of Bobbio. Composed in the early 640s, the Vita is the fundamental narrative source for Columbanus’s career in Gaul and Italy and also preserves notices of Attala, Bertulf, and the first decades of the Italian foundation. Through that commission Bobuleno helped shape the historical memory of Irish monasticism on the Continent. Under his government the abbey continued as a centre of ascetic life, of copying, and of contact among Irish, Frankish, and Lombard ecclesiastics.

Beyond Jonas’s testimony, contemporary documentation of Bobuleno’s acts is extremely scarce. No dedicated early life of Bobuleno survives, and later medieval chronicles of Bobbio add little that can be independently verified. The house in his day still observed Columbanus’s rule; the gradual combination of that rule with the Rule of Saint Benedict at Bobbio belongs to a later period. Politically the monastery remained within the Lombard kingdom, whose rulers had by then largely moved from Arianism to Catholic Christianity, and it retained the privileges granted at its foundation. Bobuleno is held to have died at Bobbio in the middle of the seventh century. Traditional dates cluster around 652–654, but these figures are not confirmed by a strictly contemporary obituary and should be treated as approximate. He is believed to have been buried at the abbey.

After his death he was honoured as a saint together with the other early abbots of Bobbio—Columbanus, Attala, and Bertulf. His cult was local, centred on the abbey and on the later diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio, rather than universal. He does not have an entry in the general Roman Martyrology that would assign him a feast throughout the Latin Church, and no papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense is recorded; recognition of his sanctity belongs to the era of popular and monastic cultus. Consistent with his life as a monk and abbot, he is not known to have been married or to have had children. Surviving evidence does not attach to him a specific list of patronages of places, trades, or causes. What can be said with confidence rests chiefly on Jonas of Bobbio’s preface and on the unbroken local tradition that numbered Bobuleno among the holy superiors of Columbanus’s Italian monastery.
