Biography

Short Description

Saint Bogolep of Chorny Yar, also called Bogolep of Cherny Yar or the righteous Bogolep Chernoyarsky, is a locally venerated saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the world he bore the name Boris Ushakov. According to the received hagiographical tradition, he was born in 1631 in Moscow to a merchant household; his father is named as Yakov Ushakov. The family later settled in the Volga fortress town of Chorny Yar, in the Astrakhan region of the Tsardom of Russia. The settlement, whose name means Black Ravine, had been established in the early seventeenth century as a southern frontier post on the lower Volga.

The traditional Life describes the boy as chronically ill. During his sickness his parents made a vow that he should be dedicated to the monastic life. At the age of seven he was tonsured into the great schema, the most complete form of Orthodox monastic profession, and received the name Bogolep, a Slavonic form of the Greek Theoprepios, meaning worthy of God or pleasing to God. Thereafter the sources present him as a child schema-monk, living in prayer and in endurance of illness rather than as a member of a famous cenobitic house whose archives survive. Because the written accounts were compiled well after the events they narrate, independent archival confirmation of these details is lacking, and outside Orthodox liturgical and regional historical literature he remains an obscure figure.

Church tradition places his death at Chorny Yar in 1654, commonly on 24 July in the Julian calendar. He was buried in the town. A local cult arose in which he was honored as a wonderworker, and his relics were associated with the church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Chorny Yar. He is commemorated on 24 July, corresponding to 6 August in the modern civil calendar used with Revised Julian or Gregorian reckoning, and is numbered among the saints of the Astrakhan diocese. He held no episcopal office and belonged to no Western-style religious order; his identity in the calendar is that of a righteous child schema-monk of seventeenth-century Russia.

Veneration of Bogolep remained primarily local for a long period, as was typical of many Russian righteous ones whose cults grew from parish and diocesan memory rather than from an early, church-wide canonization act with a named glorifier. Icons depict him as a young schema-monk. He is sometimes invoked in the Astrakhan region and appears in lists of saints connected with the Volga frontier and with childhood piety. Historians of Russian sanctity treat his dossier as an example of seventeenth-century popular Orthodox devotion, while noting that the precise years of birth and death rest on later menological tradition rather than on contemporaneous civil records. Soviet-era destruction of churches in the region affected the later history of the buildings that had housed his relics.
