Biography

Bolesław Strzelecki was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest, born in 1896 in Ponikła, in the Russian-partitioned lands of Poland. He received his priestly formation for the Diocese of Sandomierz and was ordained to the secular priesthood. His working life belonged to the first decades of the Second Polish Republic, when diocesan clergy were engaged in restoring parish life after the long period of the partitions. He is not known to have belonged to a religious order, and as a Latin-rite priest of that era he lived under the discipline of clerical celibacy.

Documentation of his individual pastoral assignments remains relatively sparse in widely published sources, a situation typical of many parish priests who later died in the camps and whose papers were lost in the war. He served in central Poland in the years before 1939. The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 was followed by a systematic attack on the Polish Catholic clergy, whom the occupiers regarded as a pillar of national identity. Seminaries were shut, bishops and priests were arrested, and large numbers were deported to concentration camps.

Strzelecki was arrested by the German occupation authorities and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He died there in 1941. In the judgment of the Holy See, formed during the beatification process, his death was a martyrdom in hatred of the faith, incurred in the broader Nazi campaign against the Polish Church. Published accounts do not always agree on every secondary detail of his arrest and internment; the core facts accepted for veneration are his priesthood, his deportation to Auschwitz, and his death in the camp as a victim of that persecution.

On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified Bolesław Strzelecki in Warsaw together with 107 other Poles killed under the German occupation, a group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. The liturgical feast of the group is 12 June. Strzelecki has not been canonized. He is not associated in standard directories with a distinctive list of patronages of places, professions, or causes, beyond his commemoration among the Polish martyrs of the Second World War.
