Biography

Short Description

Bolesława Maria Lament was born on 3 July 1862 in Łowicz, in the Congress Kingdom of Poland then under Russian imperial rule. She was the eldest of eight children of Marcin Lament and Łucja Cyganowska. Raised in a devout Catholic household, she received her early schooling in Łowicz and later trained both as a teacher and as a seamstress. After her father's death she used those skills to help support her siblings. From youth she was drawn to prayer, works of charity, and the consecrated life.

In 1884 she entered the Congregation of the Family of Mary, a community founded by Archbishop Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński that had to operate in a largely clandestine way because Tsarist law tightly restricted Catholic religious orders. She made her vows and served as an educator in the congregation's schools and institutions. After about a decade, following further discernment and with ecclesiastical permission, she left that community and continued educational and charitable work independently, including among the poor.

In 1905, in Mohilev (now Mahilyow, Belarus), she founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family. The new institute was dedicated to the Christian education of children and youth, to works of mercy, and especially to fostering unity between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox. Houses were established in Mohilev, Saint Petersburg, and other places in the western provinces of the Russian Empire. The First World War and the Bolshevik Revolution forced the sisters to abandon their eastern foundations; they regrouped in the newly independent Polish state, where Białystok became an important centre of the congregation.

Lament led her sisters as superior through years of war, poverty, and political upheaval. In the 1930s she resigned as superior general because of declining health and thereafter lived as an ordinary member of the community. She spent her last years in Białystok and died there on 29 January 1946. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 5 June 1991 during a pastoral visit to Białystok, presenting her as a witness of fidelity and of work for Christian unity. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 29 January. She has not been canonized.
