Biography

Short Description

Boļeslavs Sloskāns was a Latvian Roman Catholic bishop of the twentieth century, remembered above all as a confessor of the faith under Soviet persecution. He was born on 31 August 1893 in the rural parish of Stirniene, then in the Vitebsk Governorate of the Russian Empire and now in Latvia. Raised in a Catholic farming family, he received his priestly formation at the Roman Catholic Theological Academy in Saint Petersburg. He was ordained a priest on 21 January 1917 by Bishop Jan Cieplak, on the eve of the revolutions that destroyed the imperial order and soon placed the Catholic minority of the former empire under Bolshevik rule.

In the mid-1920s Pope Pius XI attempted to restore a Catholic hierarchy inside the Soviet Union. In 1926 Sloskāns was appointed titular bishop of Cidyessus and apostolic administrator of Mohilev and Minsk. He received episcopal consecration in secret in Moscow on 10 May 1926 from Bishop Michel d’Herbigny. His public ministry on Soviet territory was extremely brief. Arrested by the Soviet secret police in 1927, he was interrogated, sentenced, and sent to the camps of the Solovetsky Islands and other places of detention, sharing the fate of many clergy and lay believers in the early Gulag.

Released in 1933 in a prisoner exchange, he left the Soviet Union and settled in independent Latvia, where he resumed pastoral and educational work among Latvian Catholics. The Soviet occupation of the Baltic states and the Second World War drove him into exile. From 1946 he lived at Keizersberg Abbey (Mont César) in Leuven, Belgium. There he served as a spiritual leader for the Latvian Catholic diaspora in Western Europe and remained a living witness to the Church’s suffering under communism, without belonging to a religious order; he was a diocesan bishop residing in a Benedictine house.

Sloskāns died in Leuven on 18 April 1981. His remains were later transferred to Latvia and laid to rest at the national Marian shrine of Aglona. The Catholic Church has opened his cause of beatification, and he is honored with the title Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day or official patronages have been assigned to him. In Latvia he is commemorated as a symbol of fidelity under persecution.
