Biography

Short Description

Bonaventura of Meako, known in many sources as Bonaventure of Miyako, was a Japanese Christian of the late sixteenth century and one of the Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan. European missionaries and chroniclers of the period referred to the imperial capital as Meako or Meaco, a rendering of Miyako, the city now called Kyoto. He is identified as a native or inhabitant of that city. No reliable source records his year of birth, the names of his parents, or the circumstances of his childhood. Christianity had been preached in Japan since the arrival of Francis Xavier in 1549, and by the 1580s and 1590s there were substantial communities of converts in the Kinai region around Kyoto and Osaka, served first by Jesuits and then also by Franciscans who established a presence in Kyoto in the 1590s.

Bonaventura was baptized and enrolled in the Third Order of Saint Francis, sharing the rule and spirituality of the Franciscan family as a lay tertiary rather than as a professed friar. He belonged to the circle of Japanese Catholics who assisted the Franciscan friars in Kyoto and Osaka, a group that included catechists, household helpers, and other tertiaries. Surviving accounts give almost no further personal detail about his occupation, family state, or particular deeds before the persecution; he is remembered because he was numbered among those arrested with the Franciscan community when the mission was struck down.

In late 1596 the stranding of the Spanish galleon San Felipe on the Japanese coast, and statements attributed to its crew about Spanish imperial power, provoked Toyotomi Hideyoshi to move against the Franciscans and their Japanese collaborators. Arrests were made in Kyoto and Osaka. The prisoners, including Bonaventura, were condemned to death. In Kyoto they were subjected to public humiliation, including the cutting of a portion of the left ear, and were then marched in midwinter down the length of Honshu toward Nagasaki, exhibited in the towns along the route as a warning. The condemned group consisted of six Franciscan friars (among them Peter Baptist, Martin of the Ascension, Philip of Jesus, and Gonzalo García), three Japanese members of the Society of Jesus (Paul Miki, John of Goto, and James Kisai), and seventeen Japanese laypeople, several of them Franciscan tertiaries and some of them still children.

On 5 February 1597 the twenty-six were crucified on Nishizaka Hill in Nagasaki. Bonaventura of Meako was put to death with the others. The martyrdom became one of the defining events of early Japanese Christianity. Pope Urban VIII beatified the twenty-six on 14 September 1627. Pope Pius IX canonized them on 8 June 1862. In the General Roman Calendar they are commemorated together on 6 February as Saint Paul Miki and Companions. No independent feast, distinctive patronage, or separate legendary cycle attached to Bonaventura alone is attested in the principal hagiographical collections; his cult is that of the group of Nagasaki martyrs.
