Biography

Short Description

Boniface of Brussels, also known as Boniface of Lausanne (Bonifatius van Brussel, Boniface de Bruxelles), was a thirteenth-century bishop whose career ran from the schools of Paris and Cologne to the see of Lausanne and finally to a Cistercian abbey on the edge of his native city. He was born in Brussels, in the Duchy of Brabant within the Holy Roman Empire, in the early 1180s; later tradition commonly gives 1182 or 1183. He studied at the University of Paris, was ordained priest, and taught theology for a number of years in Paris and for a further period at Cologne. He became a canon of the collegiate church of Saint Gudula in Brussels. Contemporary notices present him at this stage as a learned secular cleric rather than as a member of a religious order.

In 1231 he was chosen bishop of Lausanne, a diocese covering much of the Pays de Vaud and neighbouring lands in what is now western Switzerland, and he was consecrated the same year. As bishop he tried to reform clerical discipline and to defend the temporal rights of the Church against powerful secular lords, above all the house of Savoy, whose influence in the region was expanding. That firmness produced lasting hostility among the local nobility. In 1238, in the course of a diocesan synod, he was physically assaulted and beaten by his opponents; some accounts describe the attack as nearly fatal. Boniface went to the papal court. Pope Gregory IX, informed of the violence and of the impossibility of his remaining in office under those conditions, accepted his resignation from Lausanne in 1239.

Freed of the episcopal charge, Boniface returned to Brabant and withdrew to the Cistercian Abbey of La Cambre (Abbaye de la Cambre / Abdij Ter Kameren) at Ixelles, just outside medieval Brussels. The house was a community of Cistercian nuns, founded in the early thirteenth century. He lived there in retirement for some two decades, in prayer and austerity, and is described as serving the community as a spiritual guide or chaplain. Surviving sources do not clearly establish that he made a formal monastic profession. He died at La Cambre on 19 February 1260 and was buried in the abbey.

A cult formed at his tomb in the later Middle Ages, and he came to be venerated as a saint in the Low Countries and in the former diocese of Lausanne. He is entered in later martyrologies; there is no surviving record of a papal canonization in the later, centralized sense. His feast is kept on 19 February. He is remembered as a reforming bishop who suffered violence for defending ecclesiastical rights and as a contemplative who ended his days in Cistercian surroundings. Details of his family origin and of any juridical tie to the Cistercian order remain sparsely documented.
