Biography

Short Description

Saint Breage, whose name appears in medieval sources as Breaca, Bray, and Branca, is the patron saint of the parish of Breage in west Cornwall. She belongs to the group of early saints whose cults define the ecclesiastical landscape of Penwith and Kerrier, but who left no contemporary written record. The principal narrative of her life is known only through the sixteenth-century antiquary John Leland, who reported that he had read a Latin vita of Saint Breaca in the library of the Benedictine priory on St Michael's Mount. William of Worcester, writing in the fifteenth century, also noted her cult. From these late witnesses, and from the dedication of the parish church, a traditional biography set in the fifth or sixth century can be outlined, while it must be stressed that the details cannot be independently verified and that no year of birth or death is recorded.

Leland's summary states that Breage was of noble birth in Lagenia, that is Leinster, in Ireland, and that she embraced the monastic life. Some later retellings associate her with the community of Saint Brigid at Kildare, though that link is not firmly anchored in the earliest notices. She is said to have crossed to Cornwall with a company of Irish religious, a motif shared with the legends of Saints Ia, Gwinear, Germoe, and others of the Hayle district. Named companions in the Breage tradition include the abbot Sinninus (commonly identified with Saint Sennen), Germochus (Saint Germoe), Elwen, Crowan, and Helena. The party landed at the estuary of the River Hayle. There they met the opposition of a local ruler called Teudar, who figures in several Cornish saints' lives as an antagonist of the Irish missionaries; according to the legend, some of the company were put to death. Breage withdrew from the coast to a hill named Pencair, generally identified with Tregonning Hill above the later village, and afterwards established a religious settlement at the place that took her name.

That settlement became the parish of Breage. The present parish church, a large fifteenth-century fabric with a prominent tower, occupies a site that dedicatory evidence suggests is far older, and it has remained the centre of her cult. The neighbouring parish of Germoe, dedicated to her reputed companion, belongs to the same local cluster of west-Kerrier dedications. Her feast day is 4 June. No reliable account of her burial survives, though local tradition naturally associates her grave with the church that bears her name. She is presented in the medieval material as a consecrated virgin and nun; nothing in the sources suggests that she married or had children. Like most saints of the Celtic west she was never formally canonised by a pope; veneration grew from local use and was accepted in the pre-Reformation diocese of Exeter.

Modern scholarship treats the Irish-voyage legend with reserve. Similar stories were attached in the later Middle Ages to a string of west-Cornish parishes, and they may reflect a literary fashion or a genuine memory of Irish contact rather than a recoverable individual biography. It is possible that Breage was a British foundress whose name was later given an Irish pedigree. Proposed identifications with the Breton Saint Briac, or with other saints of like name in Ireland and Wales, remain speculative and are not supported by early evidence. What is secure is the antiquity of her cult in the parish that still bears her name, and her continuing role as patron of Breage in Cornwall.
