Biography

Brigida Maria Postorino was born on 17 November 1865 in Catona, a coastal locality of Reggio Calabria in Calabria, southern Italy, a few years after Italian unification. She was raised in a Catholic family in a region marked by poverty, limited schooling for girls, and recurrent natural disasters along the Strait of Messina. From youth she was noted for piety and for practical charity toward the poor and toward the Christian education of girls in her hometown. In the late nineteenth century she gathered companions in a consecrated life dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin Mary and to instruction and assistance of the needy, remaining rooted in Catona rather than entering an already established order elsewhere.

In 1898 she founded at Catona the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Figlie di Maria Immacolata). The institute was established to provide Christian education, especially for girls, to care for orphans and the poor, and to promote Marian devotion. The sisters combined a simple religious observance with teaching, catechesis, and social assistance. Postorino served as foundress and superior, forming the community in prayer, poverty, and service. The congregation remained based in Calabria while gradually extending its works in Italy.

She lived through the Messina–Reggio earthquake of 28 December 1908, which devastated the Strait of Messina coast, including Catona and Reggio Calabria, and caused tens of thousands of deaths. In the following decades she continued to guide her sisters through the social and political changes of twentieth-century Italy, remaining associated with the motherhouse in her native place into advanced old age. She did not hold episcopal or papal office and lived as a consecrated religious without marriage or children.

Brigida Maria Postorino died in Catona on 30 March 1960, at the age of ninety-four. She was buried at the motherhouse of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in Catona. Her cause of beatification was later introduced. In January 2019 Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree on her heroic virtues, and she was thereby declared Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal liturgical feast or official list of patronages has been assigned to her.
