Biography

Short Description

Brigida Morello was born on 17 June 1610 at San Michele di Pagana, a hamlet of Rapallo in the Republic of Genoa, the first of five children of the nobles Nicolò Morello and Lavina Borzese. She received a Christian upbringing in a Ligurian household of the early seventeenth century. On 14 October 1633 she married Matteo Zancano, and the couple settled at Salsomaggiore in the Duchy of Parma. The marriage was childless. Zancano died in 1637, leaving Morello a widow in her late twenties after only a few years of married life.

In widowhood she made a private vow of chastity around 1640 and turned her life toward prayer and charity. She moved to Piacenza, where she placed herself under spiritual direction and began to gather girls and young women for catechesis and moral formation. Drawing on the Ursuline tradition associated with Angela Merici and on the Jesuit-influenced spirituality then current in northern Italy, she sought a form of consecrated life that joined interior devotion to active service, especially the Christian education of girls.

On 17 February 1649 she established in Piacenza the community that became the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate (Suore Orsoline di Maria Immacolata). The sisters lived in common under a simple rule and devoted themselves to the instruction of girls and to care for the needy. Morello, also known as Brigida of Jesus, directed the small institute as foundress through periods of ill health and the ordinary trials of a new foundation in a seventeenth-century Italian city. The congregation remained modest in her lifetime but took root in Piacenza and later spread in northern Italy.

She died in Piacenza on 3 September 1679. A local cult developed after her death, and a beatification process was opened in the diocese of Piacenza before the end of the seventeenth century. After a long interruption the cause was resumed in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 15 March 1998 in Saint Peter's Square. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 3 September. She has not been canonized. The institute she founded continues as a congregation devoted to education and pastoral work.
