Biography

Short Description

Bronisław Komorowski was born on 25 May 1889 in Barłożno, a village in West Prussia within the German Empire, in territory taken from Poland during the partitions. He was raised in a Polish Catholic family under Prussian rule. After secondary education he entered the Theological Seminary in Pelplin and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Chełmno in 1914. He then served as a vicar in parishes of Pomerania.

After the First World War the Treaty of Versailles created the Free City of Danzig. Komorowski became a leading priest among the Polish Catholic minority in Gdańsk. He combined parish ministry with social and national work, supporting Polish schools, cultural associations, and organizations that sought to maintain Polish language and identity in a city whose public life was dominated by its German-speaking majority. He was widely regarded as a principal figure of the Polish community in Danzig.

In 1935 he was elected to the Senate of the Second Polish Republic. When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Nazi authorities immediately targeted Polish clergy and civic leaders in Danzig and Pomerania as part of the campaign against the Polish intelligentsia. Komorowski was arrested and later sent to the Stutthof concentration camp, which the Germans established near Danzig in the first weeks of the war. On 22 March 1940 he was shot at Stutthof together with other Polish priests and community leaders.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of Polish bishops, priests, religious, and lay people killed under German occupation between 1939 and 1945. The Catholic Church observes their collective memorial on 12 June.
