Biography

Short Description

Blessed Bronislava (Polish: Błogosławiona Bronisława) was a thirteenth-century Polish noblewoman of the Odrowąż family who became a Premonstratensian canoness. She was born at Kamień in Silesia, a Piast duchy that still belonged to the Polish political and cultural world, into a kindred that produced several notable churchmen. Among her relatives were Saint Hyacinth of Poland (Jacek Odrowąż), the Dominican missionary later called the Apostle of the North, and Blessed Ceslaus of Wrocław. Almost nothing reliable is recorded of her childhood beyond her noble birth and the strongly ecclesiastical character of her family, which was closely tied both to the new mendicant orders and to older monastic houses in Lesser Poland and Silesia. Later tradition places her birth around the opening of the thirteenth century; no contemporary document preserves an exact year.

While still a young woman she entered the convent of Premonstratensian canonesses at Zwierzyniec, a house just west of Kraków on the left bank of the Vistula. The community, dedicated in honour of Saint Augustine, followed the Rule of Saint Augustine according to the customs of the Order of Prémontré and combined the choral recitation of the Divine Office with enclosure and works of charity. Bronislava remained there for the rest of her life. Surviving notices, which are late and hagiographical rather than archival, describe her as given to prayer, fasting, and care for the poor who came to the convent. Precise details of her daily observance are lacking, as is typical for thirteenth-century nuns whose lives were not written up by contemporary biographers.

The Mongol invasion of 1241, which laid waste much of Lesser Poland and ended in the disaster at Legnica, broke the peace of the Kraków convents. Tradition long current in the Zwierzyniec community relates that Bronislava and her sisters fled the approaching armies and that she withdrew to a nearby hill—later associated in local memory with her name, on the Sikornik height west of the city—to pray for the safety of Kraków and of Poland. Later accounts also speak of a vision of the Virgin Mary granted to her in that time of danger. After the invaders withdrew she returned to the restored convent and resumed the hidden round of choir and enclosure.

In 1257 her kinsman Saint Hyacinth died in the Dominican priory at Kraków. Polish tradition, often illustrated in later religious art, holds that Bronislava received a vision of his soul being received into heaven. She herself died on 29 August 1259 and was buried in the convent church at Zwierzyniec. Veneration at her tomb continued through the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. In 1839 Pope Gregory XVI confirmed her cult, an act treated as equivalent to beatification; she has not been formally canonized and is commemorated as Blessed. Her feast is kept on 29 August, especially in Kraków, in Silesia, and within the Premonstratensian Order. Her relics remain in the Norbertine church of Saints Augustine and John the Baptist at Zwierzyniec, and a mound and sanctuary on Sikornik Hill in Kraków recall the traditions attached to her life.
