Biography

Short Description

Bruno of Querfurt, also known as Brun and by his monastic name Boniface, was a Saxon nobleman, Benedictine monk, missionary archbishop, and martyr of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. He was born at Querfurt in the Duchy of Saxony, into a comital family related to the Ottonian imperial house, most likely in the mid-970s; no contemporary source records an exact year of birth. He was educated at the cathedral school of Magdeburg under Archbishop Adalbert of Magdeburg and became a canon of that church. In 997 he accompanied Emperor Otto III to Italy. Deeply moved by the recent martyrdom of Adalbert of Prague among the Prussians and by the religious life of Rome, he entered the monastery of Saints Boniface and Alexius on the Aventine, a house of mixed Greek and Latin observance, and took the name Boniface.

After a period of monastic life in Rome he attached himself to the eremitical circle of Saint Romuald of Ravenna and lived as a hermit at Pereum near Ravenna. Combining the reformed monasticism of Romuald with a vocation to preach among pagan peoples, he obtained from Pope Sylvester II consecration as a missionary archbishop, with a pallium and a mandate to evangelize the heathen. His subsequent journeys took him through Hungary, where political and ecclesiastical obstacles limited his work, and then to the court of Duke Bolesław I of Poland, who supported Latin missions on his eastern and northern frontiers. Bruno composed a Life of Saint Adalbert of Prague and a Life of the Five Martyred Brothers, important early sources for the missionary history of the region. In a letter to King Henry II of Germany he rebuked the king for making war on Christian Poland in alliance with pagan Liutizians, arguing that a Christian ruler ought not to join idolaters against fellow Christians.

Bruno also undertook a dangerous mission among the Pechenegs of the Pontic steppe and is associated in later tradition with preaching in Sweden. In late 1008 or early 1009 he set out with eighteen companions to convert the Prussians and neighboring Baltic peoples, following the path of Adalbert. The Annals of Quedlinburg record that he was captured and beheaded by pagans on the border of Rus’ and Lithuania, together with his companions, in February 1009. That notice is the earliest written mention of Lithuania in a Latin source. The precise site of the martyrdom is not known; it is generally placed in Yotvingian or Prussian territory on the eastern Baltic frontier. Bruno was at once venerated as a martyr in Saxony and Poland. His cult belongs to the pre-congregation period of saint-making; no papal act of canonization is recorded. He is remembered as a principal missionary saint of the Ottonian age, linking Romuald’s monastic reform with the eastward expansion of Latin Christianity.
