Biography

Short Description

Brunon Zembol, baptized Jan Zembol, was born on 7 September 1905 in the village of Łętowe in the Limanowa area of southern Poland, then part of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within Austria-Hungary. He is known in the sources principally as a professed member of the Order of Friars Minor. Upon entering the Franciscans he took the religious name Brunon and lived thereafter as a friar in a Polish community of the order. Publicly available documentation of his family background, education, and the exact years of his novitiate and profession is sparse, as is often the case with the lesser-known religious among the large group later beatified as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. What is firmly attested is that he belonged to the Franciscan family in Poland in the interwar period and followed the ordinary round of prayer, community life, and work associated with the Friars Minor.

The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and the ensuing occupation brought a systematic assault on the Polish Catholic Church, which the Nazi authorities treated as a pillar of national identity and a potential focus of resistance. Clergy and religious were arrested in large numbers. Brother Brunon was among those seized by the German occupation apparatus. After detention he was deported to the Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria, which the regime used as a principal internment site for Polish priests and religious. There Polish clergy were confined under a regime of forced labor, hunger, disease, and violence from SS personnel.

Brunon Zembol died in Dachau on 21 August 1942. The Catholic Church later recognized his death as martyrdom suffered in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred for the faith, within the broader persecution of the Church in occupied Poland. The precise medical cause of death and the details of his arrest and transport are not richly documented in published sources. Like most prisoners who died at Dachau, he has no known grave; camp practice was cremation of the dead.

On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified Brunon Zembol in Warsaw together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution from 1939 to 1945. The group is known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II and is commemorated collectively on 12 June in the Polish liturgical calendar. He has not been canonized. No distinctive individual patronages of places, professions, or causes are customarily attached to his name in standard hagiographic lists.
