Biography

Short Description

Brynolf Algotsson, known in Latin sources as Brynolphus, was Bishop of Skara in the medieval Kingdom of Sweden from 1278 until 1317. He was born in the mid-thirteenth century in Västergötland, into the noble lineage later known as the Algotssöner. His father, Algot Brynolfsson, was lawspeaker of Västergötland, one of the principal legal offices in the Swedish provinces. Surviving records do not preserve a documented year or town of birth, and later dates sometimes offered for his birth remain estimates rather than contemporary attestations.

He received an advanced clerical education at the University of Paris, where he is said to have remained for a long span of years studying theology and canon law. That Parisian formation made him one of the more scholastically trained Swedish bishops of his generation. In 1278 he became Bishop of Skara, a see whose territory lay in his native Västergötland. He governed the diocese for nearly forty years, a lengthy tenure by medieval standards.

As bishop he is associated with the ordering of diocesan life and with Latin liturgical poetry. He is credited with composing rhymed offices, including an office for Saint Helena of Skövde (Elin of Skövde), thereby promoting a local saint within the Latin liturgy of the diocese. His years in office also overlapped a notorious family conflict: in 1288 his brother Folke Algotsson abducted Ingrid Svantepolksdotter from Vreta Abbey, an episode that drew the anger of King Magnus Ladulås and brought severe consequences for the Algotssöner. The bishop thus stood at the intersection of aristocratic kinship, royal authority, and the Swedish church in a turbulent period of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.

Brynolf died on 6 February 1317 and was buried in Skara Cathedral. A cult formed around his tomb, with reports of miracles, and in the fifteenth century Swedish churchmen sought a formal canonization. Permission for veneration was granted in the early fifteenth century, and later in that century relics were translated and further inquiries were made, but no completed papal canonization followed, and the sixteenth-century Reformation in Sweden closed the process. He has continued to be remembered as a saint or blessed in Swedish Catholic tradition, with his principal feast observed on 6 February, and as an important figure in the medieval history of the Diocese of Skara.
